If I were to fish the Columbia again, I would find spots where you know there are carp in and without snags or just use my iBobber (that's a whole subject I will probably put out later). Use a massive amount of weight, and also connect some kind of wire/clip/mechanism where you can put more than a handful of packbait. I would also use corn as my hookbait and corn included in the packbait. The columbia river carp freakin love corn! Not telling you how to fish, but you can use my techniques and thoughts as a proxy.
