Squawfish tournament

Fun quiz, over 50% (11,500) of the fish handled were just two species, both native. Any guesses as to what two?

I'll go with peamouth and largescale sucker..

And the day I need to kill fish that I have no intention of eating will be never. That, and removing native sportfish's food supply seems pretty dumb and counterproductive.

You got one of them. Largescale suckers have by far the most biomass of any fish in the Willamette.

I am guessing some other minnow type species for the second :) To your credit, I did remember large scale suckers as the primary biomass. Thanks for that!

Also, to anyone who thinks they "piddle" standing up more than me. Please.

The minnows are the northern pikeminnow, chiselmouth, and peamouth. (We get about 6 chiselmouth-pikeminnow hybrids a season - goofy looking fish) It's none of those. Pikeminnow make up about 8%, and chiselmouth and peamouth are quite a bit less than that (I don't remember off the top of my head).

Hey,

Carp are also minnows!

no doubt about that. As a fellow Hobie rider, I was wondering about when we "piddle" while kneeling? Where does that rank on the "piddle" list? I could try it standing up but hitting that Mirage drive well is tough enough from my knees....LOL

That is pretty dang funny Roger.

I was a little confused myself about "piddling," that being an expression I am not familiar with, but I think I got it figured out. "Paddling" is how I power my kayak through the water. "Pedaling" is how I power my bicycle. "Piddling" must refer to what you guys are doing out there in your Hobies to get around. I am still at a loss as to how you could power that MirageDrive while standing up. Oh well.
On a different note, I would like to thank the folks here that helped educate me about squawfish in this thread. I really learned a lot that I either didn't know or was misinformed about. I love hearing from the folks here that study and appreciate fish biology, especially local fish biology (whether native, non-native, invasive, or just plain snuggly fish, like the sturgeon.)

Man I wish I could join this tournament but Corvallis is far!

Sometimes, when I wittle, I piddle a little...

For the record... I cringe at editing anyones post, however terms for the act of urination caused a lot of mayhem for the forum recently. I thank you for using humor when addressing my editing as the abject failure it is.
