Siltcoos Lake fishing reports

according to the license and tag issuer at fred meyer in florence, people are being sketchy poachers and purchasing 1 day tags so they can keep tagging siuslaw coho. while it's a loophole you can get away with, it is 100% illegal.

Coho are 1/day 5/year. However if you get your siuslaw coho which is 1/day 2/year, that goes towards your 5/year at the lake and you can then only retain 3 lake coho. The 20 is for Chinook and does not apply to coho. The guide was probably making reference to a hatchery card which you can use after you fill your first tag, but it's only for hatchery fish which you will not find in the siuslaw basin or the coho lakes.

Jeanna is correct but remember that because the combined angling tag is the only place wild fish can go, and you only get one of these tags per year, we each have a 20 fish limit that is the sum of all the wild chinook, wild coho and wild steelhead that we retain.

Hatchery fish can also go on that tag but reduce the number of wild fish you are allowed for the year.

Cheers, roger

I have my initial tag that I bought when I was on the Rogue in Jan. Roger, are you guys saying I could put 20 wild fish on it but only 5 coho, 2 river 3 lake. I have my river coho, so I can get 3 more lake silvers and fill up the rest of my tag with wild kings? heck, that's enough fish to last me fur sure. I'm poor, and looking for pt work. had an interview at the casino here when I first got here in sept. But if one has any spare fish no matter what kind, I'll put it to good use. I love Alaskan Cod. :)

if the state lets peeps continue to purchase 1 day tags and they mark down 5 wild coho from the river, then that sounds stupid to try? if the state lets people buy more than 1 tag per year then it seems to me they are asking for trouble. I just don't know! Then dfw would have to keep records of peeps names in their data base wouldn't they? I never knew you could buy more than 1 tag.

Got out on the water around 9am and the wind was blowing like crazy.but me and the wife hunkered in and was tagged out by 11 .nice buck 31 inches and the hen my wife caught was 29 inches

outstanding, that hen your wife tagged is a beauty, so thick it looks like a nook!

you are correct about your 'combined angling tag', you are fine if it has no more than 2 wild coho from the rivers and 3 wild coho from the lakes and then the remaining 15 could be any combination of wild chinook, hatchery chinook, hatchery steelhead, or hatchery coho (with a few areas having tighter limits on wild chinook- Tillamook bay area for example 10 fall wild chinook is the max for the year). You could also have a few wild steelhead on the tag if you fished in one of a few SW rivers (under MCP a few more places will open to limited wild steelhead retention soon, perhaps next year).

someone buying a 1 day license for $16.75 (tag for that day comes with it) would get to tag just 1 wild coho that day but are still subject to the seasonal limits. so anyone doing that to exceed the 2 river + 3 lake seasonal limit are breaking the law. Once you buy a license (and ID is required OR drivers licence is listed on resident licenses), you are in the system and also given a hunter/angler ID number. They should be able to set the system to flag someone buying a bunch of short-term licenses or someone with an annual license and tag that suddenly starting to buy daily licenses, that should be a big red flag!

cheers, roger

Should be a red flag but if they don't have an annual license a person can purchase as many 1 day licenses as they want, and they can't do anything about it. You're not required to turn them in before getting another 1 day. It's totally illegal but until licensing laws are changed they are allowed to do it. Pretty damn expensive for a small coho

So ur saying people are buying a one day license for 1 river coho? Then turning around and buying another, and another etc etc.

Sounds good to me, as long as they are paying their $16.75 per fish. Thats over $80 for 5 coho, and normally would cost a person bout $60, so the ODFW gets $20 more in revenue!

not good, doing that to get 5 coho from the river would violate the seasonal limit for an individual (2 from the central rivers). so doing it twice, just fine. doing it twice for the river and 3 times for the lakes, also fine. but no reason someone with an annual license would do it unless they wanted to exceed the seasonal retention limit.

Very nice! We wanted to go but didn't want to fight the wind.
How far into the lake were you finding the fish?

Nice fish! Good to see the lake putting out some awesome fish!

Best,

we fished the Fiddle Cr. arm for 2 hours this evening. No luck for us but did see 2 of the three other boats up there catch one. And of course, they both kept fishing ALL lines afterwards. Very disappointing.

Bummer. My friends have been out early and had their limits by 9am both days this week. 3 fish up Fiddle Creek and one OFF Booth Island. All 4 fish came by casting #5 blue fox. We are planning to hit the lake Wednesday. Cheers, roger

Siltcoos Lake fishing reports

We will be there tomorrow also. we marked a lot of fish just east of Booth Island and will probably start there just after daylight.

we were having a beautiful, relaxing day along the west side, in no hurry to each catch one coho, then 2 hours in some nice big fish started rolling all around us, near Fish Mill Lodge, just as MikeRedding and his wife cruised by with their 1 fish limits :thumb:, they watched us cast for a few minutes but the coho were just not hitting the normal spinners.

so I decided to mess with the coho and not 5 minutes after they left, a chunky 32" hen slammed the 2/5oz brass/red lil'cleo that I was working deep right at the edge of a large bank of weeds....Rachelle was ready for a cup of coffee so I handed it OFF to her, we did our best to bungle things up near the boat when the fish woke up and went crazy (several times) but in the end, another big coho in the net. (I am glad Mike and his wife didn't see it, we seriously looked like rookies).

so she pours a cup of coffee but doesn't get more than a sip because I switched to my killer #4 Blue Fox (black with green prism tape on the back of the blade) that I bought at GI Joes in Gresham in 1992! and 3rd cast I had a nice 30" buck on that really wanted to fight, he was not happy. But as usual for us lately, it ended up in the net so I got them both bled/gutted and then we both had some coffee before slowly heading to the launch...(lures we caught each on are in the image). this relates to line discussion on another thread but we use 8# P-line cxx leader for all our coho fishing with spinners/spoons.

both fish came on my new 8.5' IM7 rod from Cabela's (TTT864-T) and I am really taking a liking to this rod, both fish did a whole lot of jumping and head thrashing at close range and the rod just soaked it up and reacted fast...including the big buck I got last week, this rod is 3 for 3 on big spinner/spoon hooked coho! I plan to use this rod for trout/kokanee and coho, probably not chinooks. FYI- looks like these rods are on sale again, I plan to pick up a second for our boat:

Well it sounds like we missed the show! Congrats, my wife was dying of laughter when I read your post to her. We have all had those moments when we acted and looked like rookies.

I also use an IM7 Cabelas Tourney Trail and absolutely love that rod. It is the medium action 9' model. Picked it up last summer (2013) on sale for $32 and now have one for tuna also.

Good going guys!

That lake is a gem.

Best,

Well the fishing was pretty good today. We started below the Fiddle Creek trestle and trolled various plugs up the arm. After several loops around the arm and multiple color changes my wife hooked up on an old red, hooked jaw bruiser that she decided to release. Two passes later she hooked another that turned out to be a chrome 22" hen that we kept because it was hooked so bad it wouldn't have made it.

I ground it out for a couple more hours of trolling multiple colors and finally found one that they wanted. Ended up with a thick 33" buck and it was over.

Many boats catching fish up there unfortunately we only saw one of them that didn't put ALL lines back in after. I finally started making loud comments towards them ad some left the area although I did see some of them fishing other areas when we were heading back to the ramp. Very disappointing that there are so many people that blatantly disregard the laws.
