Most Godawful experience.

Really? Everything I've needed to deal with the state here has cost more than in Ca. Did you know that a vehicle title in Ca, runs about $20, over $70 here. A DL is around $30.
boat registration is $10 per year.
If you're gonna deride my complaint, best to get your facts straight.

I think you forgot something on the vehicle costs- CA charges sales tax on dealer purchases and "Use Tax" on non-dealer and used car purchases (7.5% to 10%), plus each year when you register the car, you pay Vehicle License Fee of 0.65% of the car value, which depreciates over 11 years.

so let's say you buy a $20,000 car, in a best case 7.5% location, that's $1500 plus your first years reg. is $46 plus 0.65% adds another $130, so I think that makes the car $21,676 out the door, then the next year the reg. is $46 + .0065*$18,181 = $164, third year is $152, fourth year is $140.

That means for the first 4 years- tax, registration renewals, and VLF: $2,132. (got your eye on a $40,000 truck, double it to $4,264!)

now let's buy a $20,000 car in Oregon (or a $40,000 truck): no sales tax, 4 year registration: $172. Welcome to Oregon, have a nice day :)

I don't wonder about that. What I wonder about is why there is a monopoly on accepted courses therefore keeping the cost of a training course noncompetitively high.

I hate to say this but I think the cost is about equal and about right..

CALIFORNIA MOTORCYCLIST SAFETY PROGRAM (administered by CHP) "Upon successful completion of the CMSP Motorcyclist Training Course students will receive a DMV DL389 certificate that may waive the riding skills test requirement at the DMV. If you haven't completed the written DMV test you must pass it prior to receiving your license endorsement." $250 ($170 for under 21).

TEAM OREGON (a cooperative partnership with the Oregon Department of Transportation and Oregon State University)
Basic Rider Training (BRT) is a 15-hour course for beginners that includes eight hours of practice riding. No experience necessary! BRT meets Oregon's mandatory training requirements for all new license applicants. Tuition is $199.
Intermediate Rider Training (IRT) is an eight-hour course for riders with some experience: Participants must be able to get underway, turn, shift and stop a motorcycle. IRT meets Oregon's mandatory training requirements for all new license applicants who are 21 or older. Tuition is $169.

I just moved here fulltime two years ago after 58 years in california. I'm not deriding your complaint; I had a different reality....i guess.

vehicle title? how about vehicle registration.

I hate to pile on but 'get your facts straight' sort of opens the door...

CA boat reg. is $36 for 2 years. It is only $20 for 2 years for boats used exclusively in the ocean, not many people have those sort of boats.

OR boat reg. is $53 for 2 years for a 16 foot boat. So that is $8.5 more per year for this length boat. Not much, right?

But OR gas cost holds fairly constant at $0.50 per gallon less than CA. So that means break even is 17 gallons of gas per year. Use more than that and your combined Reg/gas cost is lower in Oregon.

Just my .02... I've had my boaters card for 4 days now. I payed for and took an online course that included the test at the end. $40 said and done. How much is an ODL? $75.00? There were a few times during the actual test that I thought to myself "this is just as important as a driver's license test.. And I'm doing it online, in my living room, at my leisure.". Never, at any point, did I think the course or the license test was unreasonable.. In any way... The bickering and arguing confused me a little bit.. Are you guys upset at the "high prices of registering a boat and paying for the privilege operating it on public waters"? Or are you upset about the fact that you can't just anonymously jump behind the wheel of a 300hp jet sled and blast past swimmers, over divers, and use 'no wake' buoys as a personal slollumn course? SCREW THE MARINE BOARD! Right guys? How dare they allow us to operate pleasure craft on their waterways?!? AND they're going to make us accountable for our actions via license numbers, registration numbers, basic rules, and tickets and fines?!? Geez.. Pick one or the other, buddy. Am I right guys? Geez..

Nothing quite like peeps who move to our beautiful state; only to incessantly complain about how things are run around here and stir up a hornet's nest.

NOT.

Herefishy nailed it.

If California is so awesome (with all of its lack of water), you're welcome to stay there :) really, oregon has open borders you're not trapped here

More of your tax dollars hard at work. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will no longer test for toxic algae in reservoirs in the Willamette Valley. Pubic safety maybe?

News Flash: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers partners with ODF&W. Personal Blue-Green Algae test kits now available for purchase at all official angling license outlets for $12.50. Please inquire when purchasing your required Columbia River Basin Endorsement. [emoji23]

but does the testing actually do any good or is it just wasting tax dollars and hurting local businesses with unnecessary alerts?

there seems to be a valid debate on this right now due to things like time to get back results (2 weeks?), the blooms/toxins being localized in some lakes, or coming up and going away quickly (note recent Detroit Lake alert on May 15, how many people heard that they cancelled that alert May 21, right before the holiday weekend?)....this is not a simple issue.

Frankly, I would have much preferred to stay in C.a. as screwed up as it is.

This is today's Gas Heat Map:
Yeah, get ready for a big change in that. Oregon is trying out a "pay per mile" tax right now. If they can't make that work no doubt they will raise the Per gallon tax considerably. Ca does have a larger gas tax and special formula gas to lower pollution. It also has a huge highway system to pay for so all those tourists can get from A to B. Oregon on the other hand has, what, two interstates? And from my last trip through Portland, it's a disaster. Or maybe it's just the inability of Oregon drivers to understand simple road rules and courtesy.

Unfortunately , I am trapped here. Had I any choice in the matter I would have much preferred Oklahoma.

That may be but The DMV in Ca. will also accept certification from other Rider safety courses. You do not have to use only the state sponsored course. Fact is I know of no Ca riders that too the CHP course, and I know a lot of bikers.

$12.50 for a kit--really? From what I read it was the cost ($200.00) and the time to get back the results. Like Rogerdoger correctly pointed out. Would these $12.50 kits give immediate results? Do they sell them at Dicks, Bimart, Ect.

Hey Plumbertom, I understand your frustration, but I see no need to insult Oregonians and their state.

the gas tax (21cents more in CA) and different fuel blend are correct, didn't say otherwise just that gas is 50 (to 80) cents more in CA. and the "pay per mile" experiment is a swap for lower gas tax, which would actually help boat owners...I personally would add 50cents per gallon to the federal gas tax tomorrow but that is just me.

but I have lived in and driven through CA since 1983, lots of the roads there suck big time. I-5 through Stockton, 99 south of Sacramento for example...drivers suck in CA also, in my opinion. LOL

as for roads, it helps to normalize for population. CA is at 246 people per sq. mile. OR is 40 people per sq. mile. so 5 times higher population density means that many more people paying for the roads in CA.

Shane gets my vote for best post of 2015, I am still cleaning the coffee OFF my laptop...

I wasn't aware I was Insulting anyone other than the inefficient state bureaucracy and maybe those politicians that allow endless regulation of private citizens.

Saying that you prefer a dust bowl like Oklahoma to Oregon is on the edge of being insulting. Oregon is not a business or retirement friendly state, but I still love it here.
