I'm trying to register my boat here.
What the heck is wrong with this state?
First I have to take a safety course. Pay a fee.
Then I need a card. Pay a fee.
Then I have to provide the card. Pay a fee.
Or I can go to Salem to do it. Maybe. If I have all the required paperwork. Which they list nowhere.

I did an online course for free to get my boater's license (https://www.boatus.org/courses/). So at least there was no fee for taking the course. At the end you take a test and when you pass you can get your boater's card. Nice thing is that it does not take too long to complete the course.

I have a copy of my completion of that same course right beside me. I read I can mail it to them and they will allow me to Pay them $10 and will send a card in about a month and a half.
Meantime I can't operate my boat.

When I moved my boat from cali to here last year, the sherriff came to my house to verify the BIN number. Then, registration was no biggie. I've since taken the required boater safety class - which is required of ALL Oregon boat operators and is good for life.

Attitude. learn it. live it. Life is so much easier that way.

Ding ding.

I don't know--I'm kind of on Plumberton side here. I also took the safety class and I thought it was a complete waste of time and money. The safety classes are a result of all the wave runners out there. Now, I just wondering how long the free inspection sites will be free. Now I hear that the Oregon state marine board is having computer problems which is the reason some people have to wait months for their card.

When I took my safety class, I got a paper receipt....which was good until the card arrived in the mail. ;)

Were there some things in that class that had nothing to do with me and my 14' aluminum fishing local lakes for bass. yup.
Were there things that would have been helpful when I owned one of my previous boats? yup.

More boaters' getting any kind of boating education is a good thing......imo anyway

PS: I dint have to have my boater safety card BEFORE I registered my boat in oregon. Has that ruled changed?

I have no problem with the Safety course being required. A couple of days reading it and answering the questions at my leisure didn't bother me at all.
If I could just pay the fee and get the card quickly enough to use the boat this season, I'd consider it reasonable.
I read there is a couple of local marine shops that do the registrations, I'll contact one of them and see if they can also do the title transfer. Of course, that also involves paying them a service fee for their trouble, in addition to the state required fees.

Jumping through the hoops Tom? Me too! Just registering a 'home built'' requires a Notary Public, couple of ID's , eventual inspection by the Sheriff, pocket full of money, patients and time. $71 so far. My process started in March and I'm still waiting…..Called the Marine Board after 45 days as the temporary permit is good for 60 days- Still no answer. All for a twelve foot wooden boat and electric motor!

For who? Oregon?

Just watching the dingbat show at Hagg lake opening day should answer that question.

I'm afraid it doesn't. Getting a boating license will not cure lack of common sense. There are still idiots on the road and I assume most have a licenses.

Be glad you have a boat that's titled and registered, you don't even want to know what you have to go through to title a boat that's never been titled.

As far as the boat safety goes I don't know why people get their panties in such a twist over it, it's no different than operating a vehicle, we all had to go through testing for that, and had to pay for that as well. It's 10 bucks. It's the least expensive thing you will ever do in boating. They give you a temporary card that is good for 2 months, so there's no waiting to operate your boat in the meantime.

Do you enjoy paying an extra $9.75 for fishing for Salmon, Sturgeon, or Steelhead coming off the Columbia? Do you think it necessary and the money is spent wisely? Same question for the boating safety courses. I don't. Personally, I think it just a sly why of generating more revenue. I could go on and on, but I thought I would explain why I have MY panties in a twist.

I agree that it just a way of generating revenue.
I've encountered this before here in Oregon while transferring my Motorcycle endorsement for my Drivers license.
I was astonished that a first time endorsement for a MC here can run upwards of $350, and that's after you already have paid the fees for a basic drivers license..
Although I wasn't required to meet all the fees and programs because of both my age and previous Ca. endorsement, it was still unbelievable.
You'd think Oregon would encourage the use of fuel efficient, less polluting and traffic reducing vehicles instead of unfairly placing huge extra requirements and fees upon their use.

...I wonder why Oregon might require a training class for new motorcycle endorsements....

thats funny that you're from (or spent time in) california and complaining about the 'fees' here in oregon.

I don't wonder about that. What I wonder about is why there is a monopoly on accepted courses therefore keeping the cost of a training course noncompetitively high.

Really? Everything I've needed to deal with the state here has cost more than in Ca. Did you know that a vehicle title in Ca, runs about $20, over $70 here. A DL is around $30.
boat registration is $10 per year.
If you're gonna deride my complaint, best to get your facts straight.
