How do we get more fishing patrol at ABC?

If you're having a bad fishing day because of crowds, noise, and people fishing next to you doing dumb things, then you need to find another body of water to fish instead of complaining about it. What do you expect from a popular city waterway? Do some research and go fish somewhere where you'll have a good time catching fish while enjoying the surroundings and wildlife. Then perhaps you'll come home happy and in a good mood and post something a little more positive.

stop making sense

Anybody get their drone tags yet? I heard there's no bag limit on those ;)

FWIW, I *did* see LCAC at Alton Baker last week, ticketing kids with their dogs off-leash while playing disc golf in the new area for it. I think I've only seen a fishing patrol once, a year or two ago.

Good Point!

Teubie might be venting, but there isn't anything wrong with that. Like TD said, he calls if he sees more than 5 fish on a stringer. Teubie probably sees similar indicators, but a even if he is only guessing he does have a genuine concern. When I first started fishing I didn't know a lot about waters around us, most of them being some distance away. For all,we know Teubie might only have a bike or bus routes to get where he needs to go, or maybe is handicapped. I also used to go to places like Walling Pond/Walter Wirth, neither of which being hotbeds of pleasant or lawful fishermen. I could have left, but even places such as these should have the lawful and considerate anglers, while the others need to change their behavior or take off.

I hope you all have a Happy Easter. And if the above comes across as a rant against anyone, I assure you that my happy heart is not that way.

Love Ya,

E

First, I am a she...not a he. Second, I do have two 2013 cars and do not ride the bus. Thirdly, I am disabled thanks to the lovely stuff I was exposed to in Desert Storm. From prestigious career and cover of Sunday newspaper to barely walking at 45 is not what I had in mind. But it is what it is and I fish to get out of house. I expect respect, honesty, integrity...and if you cannot do this then the law needs to take over. I have emailed and called the Fish Division and will continue to do so until there is a presence and respect for our legal system and the rules. Maybe it is my career with Homeland Security, working directly in 9-11, that makes me more anal about dishonest people. I was an avid golfer and I am used to others following the rules, I guess with fishing it is different. I do not care what your color is, your language, your social status..However, I do care when you think you are above the law and everyone else. I am not bitter, I am actually pretty darn nice. You just have not taken the time to know me. Do not judge me or attack my character, until you know all about me...then I do not blame you.

 Hell yeah! Thank you for your service and for doing your best to keep folks honest. I would be proud to fish with you any day...after I get my license. Don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do, keep at it for those who don't have your kind of integrity.

Thanks for your nice reply. Im not trying to toot my own horn. I just want a small piece of the pond to fish at because I tend to fall if I go anywhere with an incline. Sometimes I do not even need an incline. lol. I would love to meet you someday at ABC. Happy fishing. Also, did I hear correctly that they stocked this week on the phone line?

Very eloquently stated above Teubie! I, too, have difficulties and have also, at times, been chastised for chasing truck trout. But, I'm just glad that I can enjoy some type of fishing. Period.

Thank you for your service. I, too, would be proud to fish alongside!

It's easy to tell Shane, they have long hair, dirty clothes, or are of a different ethnicity or social background....duh

Missed another one!

and Go Teubie!

This is just an idea... Wear a set of clothes that look official, but at the same time, don't try to impersonate any law enforcement official. I'm thinking something like a white lab coat and carrying your own fishing gear? Then go around ABC and ask people how their fishing luck is, what they are using, and if they have a license. Might be a good chance to see how the bite is and/or to let people know they need a lic. if they don't have one.

Best,

With all due respect it would be an abysmal waste of resources for officers to routinely check licenses at ABC or any other stocker pond. They need to be out protecting our resources not stocked trout.

Ya know I actually agree with FishNinja because I'm sure there's just as many or more people poaching salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, etc. Yeah its good to maybe have a Warden or ODFW worker check a license maybe on an opening day of a popular stocking pond but it would cost a lot to have them at ponds all the time.

What about this?

Send just 2 game wardens to ABC. They ticket anyone/everyone who is breaking any law. Let's say in one day, they ticket 10 people. The average of each fine is $200. That's $2,000.

Now, subtract $30 / hour x 2 for 6 hours of work ($360). A balance of $1640 is remaining.

Now, let's say that 2 other OFFicers are sent out every Saturday for a month (or whatever day you want to pick). They raid a different location each time, to keep law violators OFF guard. Now we have a bankroll, of $6560 for the month.

Then, ODFW uses this plan in say just 3 of the fishing zones in Oregon. Now there is $19,680 in the bank.

Remember, this is only using 2 OFFicers on 1 day of the week, for 1 month. Plus, only 10 tickets are given out; and in only 3 zones.

It's simple economics folks. Send enforcement OFFicers out. Build your bank. Then, hire more OFFicers for a greater enforcement net (and nab those breaking other laws, while fishing for other species).

While this is very simplistic--and they're are many more variables involved--one would think that MORE could be done about enforcing the regs in our state.

First off, I agree with fishninja. ABC and other such ponds are not worth anyone's resources. Heck, they might as well make them free fishing areas anyway so more kids can have the opportunity more often. I'd say do away with free fishing day and just invite the entire state to fish ABC and JCP for free all the time. :)

My wife's grandpa tells a funny story about him and a friend fishing at a lake and the game warden approached them. Grandpa had a license but his friend didn't. As the warden made his way to the two of them, grandpa took off running and the warden went after him. His friend walked away in the other direction and left the scene.

Grandpa talked his way out of trouble and the friend was no longer around to get a ticket.

Kids fish for free now. That's why parents take them, so they can take more limits.

Nice try... now the real math, 2 officers at 30 an hour, then health insurance 401k matching paid federal holidays 2 52,000 ford superdutys one of the officers is on paid administrative leave pretty much once a year for shootin a person of a disadvantaged persuasion.. 300 days a year in court for every single ticket that is fought.. now you need to hire a 3rd officer becouse one is on leave and one is in court.. the goverment requires the third officer to be female and she is too concerned to patrol on her own so now a state trooper for $75 and hour and all of the above mentioned perks is required to meet her to patrol, they interact with two young hispanics and a county sheriff is called in to stand around with them as back-up so the shift on call officer comes on to cover his beat... yada yada yada.. all for a damn pellet head.... end the stocking program and save 1.2 million dollars a year.. and hand it out to those basterds in food stamps-

I'm not saying this would work, but the town where I used to live had volunteers driving around in old cop cars. They were clearly idenified as volunteers, not real police, but you had to get mighty close to the car to see the "Police Auxilliary". They'd park near schools or drive in traffic during commuting times. Slowed everyone down, saved lives and probably saved the town's budget a hundred thousand or more each year.

Maybe something similar could work for game violations. They don't need to do enforcement; just driving into a parking area would frighten off most, don't you think?

And Teubie, thank you for your service. It's an honor to be here with you.

You forgot to mention the overtime pay for court appearances. I once worked with a woman that was married to a Tigard police officer and he told me that typically, any court appearances they were scheduled for appearance, were usually scheduled for off days and the officer would get paid time and a half; the extra pay was incentive for the officer to appear so that the citations would stand in court. From a few references I could find, OSP is similar.
