Another big brown from the Deschutes

Yeah, what he said. Good advice.

I've gotten hundreds of trout in a similar fashion. I use a spin rod, a float, 4' or so of light leader, a BB sized split shot and the bugger on the end. It sits just under the surface. I troll them while in my float tube. So, it's kick, cruise, kick kick, cruise, etc...similar to stripping your line.

Good luck!

try some small minnow patterns as well, muddler minnow comes to mind right now.....cast out and strip like crazy with 8 inch strips recast and repeat.

I went down yesterday about 5pm and fished for about an hour. I used a small beadhead hares ear with a bb sized split shot just above it and caught 4 big whitefish and three small trout. The first fish I had on was hard to get off the bottom and I thought I had another big brown but those whitefish give up pretty quick and I had him landed in a couple minutes.

There was a brief mayfly hatch but the rising fish were keyed on something much smaller. I caught one on a Mckenzie Caddis (used that because the mayflies were green) and missed about 4 or 5 other strikes on the dry. I'll give it another try today. My motel room is 30 feet from the stretch I like to fish...in fact I'm looking at the water right now thinking it may have cleared up just a bit from last night. Today should produce some more fish. I'll report when I'm done.

Steelhead_slayer, if you want to try my technique with a fly rod in the deep channels I can try to describe where I like to go. Let me know.

you got the spot right. i usually catch smaller fish using nymphs. sometimes bigger rainbows. good to know that'll catch big browns too. i was thinking the same thing with the wooly buggers. its just hard to commit to trying something new with so many great waters around and so little time.thanks for the advise i appreciate it

ive learned when it comes to dries in town. they will key in on color. once i got that right color. i would get fish to rise no matter the size or quality of my fly. right away i thought of a spot that sounded like where you were fishing. i"d be cool to see if i was right. and i'd appreciate learning a new technique. i usually use corkies when nymphing. that or dry drop

i went out this evening to try out some wooly buggers. fish them for about an hour with no action, but noticed a good amount of mayflies out. so i decided to switch to dries which i haven't done for a while. i had a great night watching fish raise, and catching lots of rainbows and even a little brown.

Sounds like fun. :)

Here's another one for you guys. he was 24 inches and a good fighter :D

great browns. I used to catch some like that on rapalas from some Black Hills lakes in the spring.
