I Launched my kayak from Cedar Oak ramp Saturday to huck around some crankbaits with my new casting setup. Figuring I was going to get really well acquainted with backlashes, I also brought my spinning trout rod to troll a froggy F4 flatfish behind a 1/4 oz sinker.
Sure enough, right as I was winding back yet another bird's nest I had just cleared, the trolling rod starts peeling off. This guy ran deep and put up a good fight; bent the rod nearly to the handle!
I think I found the anti long-arm angle in these shots; it was 15" or so. Released him to find another OFFer's hook someday.
Further downriver something else took the same setup, and put up an even bigger fight! On its third diving run, it found some structure to wrap around and broke the line. Never saw what it was, but I'm now completely sold on the froggy flatfish!
Final note: the Willamette was really low. The docks at Cedar Oak were in the water, but not floating. There was a 15ft stretch of silty mud at the bottom of the boat ramp before you hit the actual water. I ended up launching from the beach.
