What's the camping like?

Hey OFF'rs, it's a boys weekend and I was thinking about taking my 10yr old son camping at Harriet however he has a soccer game Sat morning which means I can't go up earlier. I've never fished or camped there and knowing that a lot of you spend a good amount of time up there, I was wondering if getting up there Saturday afternoon expecting a open campsite would be wishful thinking?

Haven't been there myself but plan on the same as you so I'd like the same info but for another weekend....

Have a great trip with your son!

I haven't been up there but it is early in the camping/fishing season and it is trout opener on many streams this weekend that should draw people away from the lakes... I think you should be alright..

There are other people who think the same way and you may get a big a surprise as to how many people are there. There are not that many spots to camp and they may be taken by the time you get there. Although there are plenty of other camping areas all around Harriet and a few other lakes as well. Just keep him out of school for monday, be selfish, the fishing could be worth it...just make sure you have some sick/personal time available. Good luck and have fun!!

Thanks all. We may not end up going but if we do, I'll be prepared to be flexible and maybe camp on the Clack or somewhere else near by. BTW, I was looking for the regs for the lake and was wondering if the following are the regs that apply or if they are the general zone regs for lakes since Harriet isn't called out specifically?

5. Oak Grove Fork and tributaries between yellow markers at upstream end of Harriet Lake and Timothy Lake Dam
• 2 trout per day, 8-inch minimum length.
• No limit on size or number of brook or brown trout taken. Catch limits on other trout
species do not apply to brook or brown trout.

So, after doing some more research, I have found that camping at Harriet is closed through Sat May 05 2012.

all lakes in the state are open year around.. you can keep 5 rainbows over 8".. (please release the browns even though they say you can keep them) Those regs you listed are just for the Oak Grove Fork river that flows from Timothy Lake to where it empties into Harriet.. Hard little river to fish that is for sure!

Thanks for clarifying. I knew the lake was open but was surprised there were no special regs for it. The above mentioned O.G. Fork regs were a little confusing for me but now make sense after reading them over again. It's a "no bait" lake, right? At least that's how I read the regs but it's interesting that in my 10th edition Fishing in Oregon book, it references trolling worms to be effective (did it used to be open to bait?). I may have to break out the Sevylor Fish Hunter after letting collect dust for 3yrs and give it a go.

bait is allowed in harriet and does really well off the bottom.

angling is restricted to lure and flies in streams unless listed under special regulations.. lakes are open to bait unless listed under special regulations

I'm blind and slow apparently. I mis-read the restriction and didn't pick up on the stream specification. Thanks!

no problem man. have a good time out there!

Well, looks lake we be hitting Harriet on a different weekend. Was prepared to head up there tomorrow but then a couple seats opened up for me and my son to chase springers on the Willamette. So we'll be out there for dawn patrol with the masses!

I just got back from Harriet! You would be pretty hard pressed to get a camping spot on the first come first serve on the weekend, but you can reserve some of the spots online now with a few days notice. I was lucky enough to get up there on Friday morning and slay them, but then it slowed down by Saturday. Hope to see you there sometime!

Here is the link so you can reserve a spot for next time! http://www.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?subTabIndex=0&&contractCode=nrso&parkCode=har1
