Visiting Eugene next week - no car - want to get a line wet!

I have read through the Alton Baker stuff and that is close to the hotel I am staying at. In town for a conference from Wednesday through Friday and will be done at 3 Friday.

Is Alton my only option? Are there other places within walking distance from the Eugene Hilton?

I am bringing my ultralight and like to fish everywhere I go. If anyone has any other tips, places to go or open boat seats (I know, dreaming!!) I would appreciate any information!!

Thanks!

Skinner butte park is close too.

Thanks. With Skinner, just fish the main river? Any particular technique?

I can possibly offer you a ride or two around town to and from local fishing spots. I have plenty of time on my hands. I am not a pro by any means at fishing but do enjoy it. They stock the canal next Thursday with more Trout. I fish the pond but I am always willing to learn about new spots and river fish. If you would like a ride, email me here. I will check my emails. Good luck and enjoy your visit.

Skinner Butte Park has nothing to do with fishing. ABC will probly be stocked next Thusday. It's an easy walk.

Really? Skinner Butte has nothing to do with fishing? It's borded by the Willamette its entire length. I caught a solid 13" porker just upstream from there today.

If you want to fish, walk down to skinner butte and throw spinners into the riffles. Use something with a little red and some gold.

If you want to sit on a bucket, get goose crap all over your shoes and catch fish you can eat with a straw, go to ABC.

Jump on a bus and go over to Springfield, you can fish the East bank of the Willamette from Main St springfield to the D st. boat ramp for summer steelies right now. Bank fishermen do well there. Throw small spinners and spoons.

Best,

Welcome to OFF, if you want to give the Willy a shot which is my opinion try 1/4oz Spinners or Spoons; Kastmasters in Gold or Silver, Blue Fox or Mepps spinners are very productive. When you pick up your angling lic pick up a synopsis and read it... The last thing you want is a ticket, There are Steelhead, Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout and some Hatchery Trout... not sure what pound test you have on your reel, I recommend at least 6lbs main line and 4lb leader.
Tight lines and welcome aboard....

You aren't being very nice to poor Grampa Ron.

Yankeehusker, I hope you enjoy your visit to Oregon. Don't forget to bring at least a light raincoat, as it will probably be raining during your visit. I am only 60 miles away, so if you need anything during your visit give me a call or shoot me a PM.

I grew up in Eugene and can warn you that you absolutely don't want to go to Springfield. Sort of a San Francisco/Oakland relationship, if you know what I mean. Also there is some Poison Oak/Ivy at Skinner's Butte so watch out for that. If you go far off the beaten path you will want to take a good shower when you get back to the Hilton. Are they going to be feeding you? If not you can stroll two blocks down to 5th Street and find a lot of good food/breweries that have good but low-cost food.

especially if you enjoy liberals, hippies and pan handlers...

Yankeehusker, Feel free to PM me your fishing schedule. I'm very close to the Hilton and might be able to get out in the evening for a few hours one day next week, I work till 5:30. Unfortunately, I dropped my rowers seat of for some modifications last night. Not sure how long it is gonna take so I am boatless as of now, but I'd go do some bank fishing with ya for some trout. I just got a 4 wt fly rod I want to try on some trout...

One of you guys offering to fish with him should take him to harvest lane and fish down from the ramp. Way down...like 500+ yards. There are great trails all through there.

Thanks so much for all the info! Really appreciate it. I will post up anything decent. Where is the harvest lane ramp?

It could explain more than we will ever know. You know it isn't an insult, just that magic invisible line between the two Cities. I always thought that some sociologists should come and study how one river could result in such drastic differences between liberal and conservative, Ralph Lauren and Carhart. Of course over the years this line has started to blur, probably a good thing for all involved. For the record I always disliked Eugene politics, lean more toward conservative thinking and hate the Ducks. On the other hand, not many Springfield officers saved all of their vacation time over the year so that they could go and be a Deadhead for a month in the summer. I did always keep my armpits shaved while on the road and i showered daily, an example not followed by many others around me. I had enough sense to never return to The Country Fair in Veneta after just one visit of wading through road dust an inch thick, seeing parents letting their toddlers swin around in the same dust and having to constantly avert my eyes from the many chubby (to be polite), hairy and naked females strolling around. I averted my eyes from the skinny, hairy and naked men walking around as well, but when a naked guy on 10' stilts goes by...well some horrors you just cannot look away from.

On the Mckenzie River Off Hayden Bridge in Springfield. Waders recommended.
