This may sound simplistic, but are there any trout in the North Santiam from Big Cliff down to Mill City/Stayton or is that stretch mainly a steelhead/salmon play?

Yes, there are trout in that section. I have seen some very nice trout taken out at and below Big Cliff. Give it a try and let us know how you do.

X 2. There are very nice fish in the Canyon area. Getting down to them (and back up again), is the hard part.
Don't ignore Big Cliff Res too.

We were on the river yesterday, just below Big Cliff. I was throwing Kastmaster and Rapala's, any my two buddies were throwing Wolly Buggers and nymphs. What's the right kind of gear to be throwing at them in that stretch of water? I'm used to still water and smaller streams like the NS above Detroit, so this big water stuff is new to me.

Those are the tackle items, that I would toss up there (including the nymphs and buggers). Although, I'd also try a Little Cleo spoon (chrome or brass); as well as a float n' pink worm.
And, where bait is legal, dead drifting (with the least amount of weight possible) the good ol' nightcrawler.

I saw a couple of guys throwing what looked like a pink work just down river from us. Based on their rigs I assumed they were throwing for steelies. Are the pink works just a version of worms from Berkley?
