Trout/bass fishing

I go fishing a lot in downtown oregon city right where the river comes in between gladstone and oregon city and I was wondering what type of baits or lures work the best in that area for trout or bass and where is a good spot near oregon city to just catch fish over and over. Everytime I go down there I don't usually catch anything. But if I go up the willamette a little ways there's these rock island type things with some pretty nice pockets and I was wondering if anyone that knows about that knows the best bait or spinner to catch some really nice trout/bass/or even something better.

Thanks for reading,

Will

You'll have best luck there in OC fishing for bass rather than trout. I, and of course be confident in what you use, simpley use a white curly tailed jig. I have used rapalas, spinners, etc but I really like jigs for bass in the willamette. I can loose them all day and not go broke. I would try a rig sometime that has a 3 way swivel. Connect a sinker to one end, line to the other and a wacky rig worm or such to line on the other. Then let the wt get down and just crawl it along the bottom. Try and find an area that's not as rocky as you'll be in contact with the bottom.

Yeah I realized that the bass in the willamette love pretty much anything white I used a lure and brought it right down a stream and caught a bunch of bass one right after the other. But once it got hotter outside they're not biting anymore and idk what they're biting on. some people are trying rubber craw fish and they fish with that all day and they won't catch one fish. I was also wondering if the carp over in that sloe are biting and like what they'd be biting on i tried making dough balls but they don't stay on the hook but I know if i could find a bait for them i could catch them all day and just do my senior project that way. I haven't tried a wacky rig work yet but i'll try it and see how well it works.

Thanks for the help :)

I hardly use plastics and can't stand how ineffective most crankbaits are. I just use the standard nightcrawler. Slip sinker rig or a drop shot rig. I have caught all my bass, pike and catfish this way. I have landed an occasional carp with the slip sinker. What makes it more fun is to rig this up on a mighty might pole! Something funny about catching a fish as big as the pole you are using....

Yeah I like using worms too but idk anymore cause where I fish nothing's biting worms where I am going. I don't even know if there's fish in there. Well there is but I have no idea what they're biting on. My friend caught a 5 pound bass out of there and he was just using a worm but I can be there every day with a worm and not catch anything and I've been fishing since I was a baby so idk what to use.

What kind of cover or shade is there? Smallies like rocky areas with tree cover or shade. Bucket mouths love to hide in weed beds or submerged trees. My best rod for this at the moment is my mighty might pole. It has 6lb test that is super thin and barely visible. Slip sinker, drop shot or a 3-way swivel setup with a 12-18" leader work well. Jig that worm, reel it in slow, pull it to the left, pull it to the right. If you still have that worm on cast it back out a few times but work it slow. The best spots would be in areas you need a boat to access. The West Linn side of the river holds some good areas to fish if you feel like tromping around. The best times would be morning or evening at the moment. If we get an overcast day get out and work it. Try to fish in areas that don't seem to have much pressure.

the rock islands up the willamette is tyhe rock island slough according to google earth, ive gone there a bunch of times this summer and didn't get diddly but i am a bank fisher too and i did see a guy in a bass boat get a lil largemouth out of one of the slots and my fishing buddy just happened to get a pike with a white beetle spin he had, i didn't have anything white and was focusing on the bigger fish so i didn't get squat but as far as the white in the willy goes thats what ive hear a lot too.
as far as fishing close to oregon city, if you go along the 99 or whatever it is right there basically mcloughlin and go across the street from fishermans theres a mcdonalds and the entrance to clackemette park, go just past the park entrance under the overpass and there will be another entrance with a gate that is ALWAYS open you can drive into that entrance and theres a little parking area (very little ) that you can park at and you will be in the corner of the clackamette park lagoon or sheriifs pond whatever you want to call it, we call it the "O" hole since its so close to OC, i throw worms there predominantly and i ALWAYS catch fish, most of the time theyre small but i have pulled a roughly 10lb cat out of there a few weeks ago at night.
while the water is low the enitire hole is bank accessable but during the winter it gets a lil harder to find good enough bank spots.
if you go there and park in that spot or along the road right there you will see the cover that i have been fishing and if you know anything about bass youll immediatly think theyre there, and they are :)
good luck wildeye maybe ill see you out there sometime.
i live really close to that spot so anytime you want to go and need a buddy shoot me a direct message on here and ill show up. ill fish anywhere anytime in any type of weather (although i hate fishing in the wind) lol

Okay yeah I live in oregon city I go down there almost every weekend. I know exactly where you're talking about I think it looks like a really good spot I took my float tube back there and trolled a little bit and didn't catch anything. I get a couple of little fish bites but that's about it. My best friend caught a 6 pound bass right out of that river there under the bridge. I was thinking about going last sunday when it was raining a little bit but then I figured it was a bad idea because my house is about 45 minutes away from there walking.
