just an observation to pass along from my tidewater trolling so far this year: there seems to be lots of "tail striking" going on...so watch your herring rig hook placement...

I've noticed the same thing, to the point that we brought it up in conversation last Saturday. I think I am gonna start running at least one rod with a hang back hook similar to EyeFISHES set up from Ifish..... if the spin looks right it can't hurt.

we have hooked 3 so far and all 3 were on the back hook. i even caught a salmon smolt on a herring and a 4/0 hook, the herring was as big as he was.

I modified my 2 hook rig after watching this method on youtube (jump to about the 5min mark to see the trailing hook part):
I rig my trailing hook in the belly and out through the anus so that the hooks are opposing, one in front out the top, the other out the bottom just up from the tail. I have only missed 3 take downs this season on the siuslaw....
