Ok, so I am not new to salmon/steelhead fishing and I am planning to move back to Oregon. I want to expand my fishing techniques and learn flyfishing. I am thinking of a 10wt for salmon/steelhead, but I know nothing else beyond the rod maybe and the reel.
What type of line do you need? I know there are different parts to the line setup...backing,line,leader, tippet...but I am confused as hell!!! I also need to learn of course and wonder how to do that other than just wing it? any help from you fly tossers would be appreciated...:D

Are you wanting a single handed or a Spey fly rod?

I don't think I'd go bigger then an #8 in either. I've caught 30lb salmon on my #8 single hand.

single hand...

welcome man.. lots of options for gear man..

honestly starting out.. i would learn to flyfish for trout before jumping into steelhead..

trout you will catch them as you learn and refine your abilities..

steelhead, well you can be DAMN good at everything and not get something for weeks/months/years on the fly. It can get very frustrating and would cause just about anyone to quite if they were learning to flyfish and only chasing steelhead/salmon. you can only take so many cold days casting in wind and what seems like empty rivers..

once you have trout down and understand how they react and get your casting down, steelhead and salmon are much more of a viable catch.

Well, I kinda figured that...think I'll stick to gear...I slay em that way!!! cheers!

i wouldnt give up and go to gear.. for me the art of the cast, reading water, trying to figure out what fly(and tying) to use in what water color/condition is just as fun as catching steelhead on gear without catching anything.. but when you do get a steelhead on a fly.. hold on it's a fun fight that just isn't the same on a gear setup... then comes the satisfaction of completing the puzzle above to get that fish.. kick the table and start over again piece by piece but soon it starts to get a bit easier and a shorter process.

Welcome FNG!!!

We need some FNG's around here!

Stick to gear....I always feel sorry for the fly guys standing out there in the current in all that cold water when I float by fighting another fish! Those 2 hand rod guys look cool fishing though....T-snap the line out and fish the swing....but still....I like to catch fish!!! Roe for me when it comes to winters! I know what they likes!!! ;)

High Church isn't for everyone. That doesn't mean you should give up it so soon. Fly fishing is a way of life. You dont need to start out on salmon and steelhead. Fly fishing for LM/SM bass , trout, carp and even pan fish on light gear is special in its own rite. You should at least learn the basics and give it a fair shot. It could change your life.

no matter what you choose, don't put yourself in a box-

In my limited experience with steelhead...summer fish are no more difficult to catch on the fly than trout are. You catch less fish than with trout because there are less fish around, but they take a swung fly well and seem to eat trout nymphs in the D with regularity. Again, I fished for them for only two years. I have fished for winter steelhead a grand total of 2 days...one of them yesterday. No fish caught, and I expect that deal will be pretty tough. Winter steelhead seem to be a real challenge on fly gear...I hope I can figure them out this year but am not holding out hope.

I am with the others though...absolutely get a flyrod. Buy a 6 wt, and fish for trout with it on the Deschutes...you will hook and hopefully land some steelhead. Or go bigger with a 7 or eight weight and just dive into the summer fish. Bottom line...get a rod. Flyfishing is hard to describe until you do it, but you WILL be glad you tried it...have yet to meet someone who gave it a serious go that didn't fall in love.

Just don't try the carp thing...addictive as hell and you lose all credibility as an angler...I speak from experience!

fly fishing is amazing..nothing like landing a big trout on a dry fly or a coho on a swung fly.

X 2. I've gotten more trout by using flies w/ spin gear, than other "standard" spin methods. Thinking outside of box, makes you better! I'm gonna give fly tossing, a serious try for trout and then Summer's in '11.

Another reason to try fly fishing; especially in streams...the fish eat them all year long. And they eat flies more than they'll attack any spin gear, that I've ever used. Flies, in short, are a natural bait. And imitating them is the bombdiggity.

Spoken like a real BAIT CHUCKIN GEAR HEAD!!! I'm sure I get more fish then he does!

Get a fly rod and your life will become complete. This too will also be my first winter targeting "Winters" but we don't get them over here on this side of the hill and I hate fishing on the other side, because of people like the above!!! I will be over in the valley for the week after X-mas along the Sandy R. so I'll be giving it a shot! Best of luck :)

OH REALLY, you think so!! Are those the only $hipoopy holes over there you have to fish?? A Wall-Mart lot, figures! Sure looks like it, when ever I've gone to a river over there that's what it's like, combat fishing in a Landfill! With all the empty bait containers and garbage that line the banks. Sad, really it is. All you crock chucking bait slinging a$hpoles are so arrogant and full of $hipoopy! If only you could all learn some River Etiquette! And that would just be a good start! Chumming with TNT I suppose, but that's only when they aren't Flossin, or is that the only way you can fill a card! Just full of "TAIL BITERS" I wouldn't doubt.

As for the OP's question. I love swinging the buggy whip. I personally would think a 10 wt to be a bit heavy for most salmonids except some exceptional Chinooks.

As for this off topic nonsense. Flybaum I do find your response a bit excessive. I did see Mad Dog specifically state his preference for roe for winters. I do think we need to take a step back and think how others will interpret what we say. that being said, I do hope that this doesn't get any more dragged out and out of proportion.

Poor representative, forgotten more?? Whatever You think educating the public is poor representation. Just another show of how arrogant you think you are. Do whatever you want. Break your rod(s) I'm sure you wouldn't be out much.
