Well, do you want to do still water (lakes/ponds/etc) fishing or do you want moving water (streams, rivers, creeks, etc) fishing? I personally enjoy moving water way more than still water!! :D Especially small streams!! They are a blast!!  :D

moving water sounds reel funmaybe a little of both .

I would say, try to get down the basics in casting first. There are tons of videos out on youtube for that. But I would recommend checking out

howtoflyfish.orvis.com

Great videos, ton's of info. The podcasts have TONS of info.

When I got my first setup, I practiced for an hour a day 5 - 6 days a week, for 2 months before I even got my line wet.

I will defiinatly check that out thank you for the info I have played around before with a fly rod and actualy caught 3 trout in a buddys pond my first time holding a flyrod but have not gotten any line wet since have pulled my rod out a few times to work my technique

I can try to show you some things on a river/lake. I Live in the Gresham area as well. Shoot me a pm if your interested in meeting up.

Orvis has a free fly fishing clinic, you can check it out on their website. Its called fly fishing 101 and they have 201 as well.

No you will not need a new reel, if you dont like the no drag I would get one but a lot of fly fishing reels have no drag, you use the palm of your hand to control how the fish takes line. Its probably not the best to learn with but its fun later on.

If you have a park near you or a parking lot or really anything wide open, I suggest getting a hula hoop or something round, tying a peice of yarn to the end of your tippet rather than a fly, and practice casting.

actualy I just found out it does have drag its a little slide action button that activates it

:DSteel Head,
I've see that picture of your boy before. Didn't you take him out on his first Springer fishing trip just last week ?
