Bottom fishing out of Sunset Bay, Oct.20

Pepper and I 'punched' out of Sunset Bay on our Hobie Outback at first light looking for limits of lingcod and black rockfish.
Went out about 1 mile NW, past Baltimore Rock, some good rocky structure under the water out near there near the bouy but all I could find were cabezon, I landed and released 3 in about 20 minutes. Other boats also reported not finding any keeper lings. Ended up putting 5 nice black rockfish in the kayak (all caught on squid at the bottom); we ended up spending 4.5 hours on the ocean. Good outing and first test of new sand wheels (BooneDOX Landing Gear) and aluminum rudder (SAI Super Rudder). cheers, roger

Crab bait tip- rockfish and lingcod carcasses make great crab bait. I marinate mine for a day or 2, then thread a zip-tie through the mouth and freeze them. The zip-tie in place lets me take them frozen and hang them in my crab pot with lots of the marinate still on them to create a scent trail when they hit the bottom and thaw.
