So I got my Prestige Plus 1 fly reel. came with 20lb dacron backing 150 yards of it. According to Cabela's it states capacity at 70 yds./20lb./WF4 Since I have WF3 line should i still use about 70 yards? this new rod is my "baby" rod literally  If it gets here that is.

I got everything I ordered cept the rod itself LOL suppose to be here friday (just better be here in time for me to put it to use this saturday)

50 to 70 yards is fine,,let me know when you get your rod and me and rose will come down and fish with ya

gotta find somewhere to go :-D gotta make me some loops and what nots on the connections. Would love to meet ya bigsteel and fish with you and lilsalmon. Maybe catch something this time LOL Saturday I am planning on hitting alton baker canal with my buddy while im down in eugene/springfield.

If you want to fill the spool to your own personal amount of fullness, spool the flyline on first then the backing on over the top until you get it as full as you like. Of course it's more work doing it that way cause you have to pull it all off once you cut the backing and then spool it all on again.

That's the way I do it, but I am anal about stuff so I wouldn't be happy unless all my spools were the same fullness.:rolleyes::think:

i would do 75 yards all the way! and in the next few weeks i might be down that way so ill let you know maybe we could fish, planning on doing mcKenzie or something else close to it

No need to overdo the backing on such small line, I personally would do like Randy stated, you want the reel almost full so when you reel, the most effect is achieved. Not sure how to say it, but less backing equals smaller circle so less achieved with each revolution (pickup of line), more backing more line picked up with each revolution. I would'nt count the length, just make it so all said, reel is almost full.

You want your fly line to wind up with as large of a loop possible to prevent memory coiling. By installing as much backing as the spool allows, the fly line will be wound around a larger diameter reducing small coils.

I second the motion!

I second the motion!

I second this recommendation. I do this whenever I can and it does make a difference even though you will strip the line in most of the time. Like OTF said it will also reduce the memory of the fly line and on light lines that is doubly important.

That's what I was trying to say, thanks onthefly!
