Some heat on the Siuslaw

Things are starting to pick up on the Slaw. I went 2/3 this weekend dragging chartreuse brined green labels. Finally got the chinook skunk gone.

The first one came in front of the CG station about 10:30am on Saturday. Marked one fish on the screen in the deep hole and 10 seconds later my rod buried.
Quite the epic fight. There were about a dozen crab pots in there and the fish was going right through them. I powered up the motor and was able to guide it out into the open water. A couple of long and deep runs and it was in the boat. 20# hen full of eggs.

That afternoon I lost a BIG one under the 101 bridge. I was tolling right under it when he hammered it. We had a strong incoming tide and it was everything we could do the keep the boat away from the bridge and work him. Had him to the boat twice but I wasn't able to net him and the wife was running the boat. Finally lost him.

Yesterday morning I picked up the 14# upstream of the barge fishing the outgoing at over 3mph. Seemed way too fast. I was messing with another rod when my sucked all the way to the water. I thought I was snagged until I got it out of the rod holder.

It was a great weekend after finally being able to catch fish on herring.
Thanks everyone for all of your advice and encouragement!!!!

Great report, thanks. These reports from the coast just make me drool! Here I sit tethered to a kitchen remodel that won't quit. Leave a couple for me, please.

Congratulations Mike. Nice way to spend the weekend & I'm glad to hear you've got fish for the freezer now...not that they will last long LOL

That's awesome Mike!

I didn't get out this weekend to truck brake issues, so it's good to see some fish on here anyway!

Best,

Those are freaking beautiful! I'm jealous. Nice work!

Hi, new to the forum here.

I'm going to be camping/fishing the Siuslaw this weekend, have any tips? It'd be much appreciated :)

What part of the river are you looking to fish? And do you have a boat?

Probably the tidewater. Yup!

Hell yeah mike! That boat is a killing machine now. No going back lol

Great info. Will start at 16" dropper when i get the chance to hop on a boat. usually stick with 20-24" But 16" sounds good.

Ohh yeahh, and mike.r. Thanks for the consistant reports. I am thriving off them since i can't fish for em yet =/

No problem. I totally know what you mean. I was hitting up all the locals for reports before I went because there were not many posting on here.

Heading over tonight to try and do it all over!
Well actually we are planning on crossing the bar in the morning for the opener of the non-selective coho season.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing how ya do out on the pond

We caught our limit out there weekend before last, unfortunately it wasn't open yet.
Probably the bar being open or not is going to be the biggest issue. It is closed to 26' and under this morning.:(

Brought my dad out on Wed at the Umpqua bar and ocean. We couldn't keep the coho off our lines, we released 3 and lost another couple. Every boat around us was doing the same. One must have been over 15#. It's going to be a blood bath this weekend if conditions are good.

I got my dad into a nook and it felt good, I'll make a thread later.

Good luck,
