I believe the reel is a tad small; spool size specifically, however don't let that stop you from using it. I'd recommend loading it with 15-20 lb braid.

The coho I've inadvertently caught fishing for steelhead on the Wilson, Necanicum and Clackamas rivers have all been of similar size and strength to steelhead, so given my experience, I would say that reel should be fine for coho.
Yeah it will be perfect. I run into a lot of em on the coast bobber and jig fishing for early winters. My steelhead reels are all 2500 and honestly the steelhead put more damage to the reel than a coho. Even the fresh ones. As stated above, braid would be a good choice as the diameter is smaller. 30lb power pro has an 8lb mono equivalency. But if you are drift fishing 10-12 lb main line will do just fine!
I'd go with 30lb power pro. The 8lb diameter will allow more line than you will ever need on that reel. If you are drift fishing or tossing spinners try 12-15lb Pline Fluoro clear. Drift fishing with braid is a no-no in my opinion.

that reel should be great, I have 2 similar Shimano "2500" size reels and we had no problems last fall with several coho, 10 to 13# fish, I have one spooled with 20# power pro, another has 12# Berkeley nanofil (great line for casting but easy to damage)..go get'em..cheers, roger

Dan,
I use a big Shimano Stradic 4500, but only to compensate for my four inches of "shortcomings". Since the two Shimano reels that I have are both 45's I have to use them for any angling that I am doing at the present time. When you go to set the hook on a trout you can actually launch those suckers about 100' unless you use some constraint. I don't have a lot of constraint, my PR being 217' 6".
