nice smooth morning, great weather, we fished mostly upstream today, then slamming hooked up about 11am just up from the bridge, near the end of the old town shops, not that big, my guess is 15#, rolled on the surface a couple of times and I got it alongside the boat twice but just not up enough for a good netting chance, then third time he ducked under the boat near the back and the line broke where it was tied to the spinner, must have nicked on something on the boat bottom based on how the end of line looked....the next one is mine!....

hearing of a few more fish being caught from other boats, still slow but improving. :D

Bummer to hear but good to know there are a few biters. I heard of one caught sunday right at the bridge.

At least it got your heart pumping for a bit. There will be more!

It happens, I'd rather see them up close and lose them rather than just have a drive by though. I think there is karma involved and that you'll be rewarded next time.

Best,

Nice report, my old woodshop teacher picked one up on friday. I will be there labor day weekend.

quick update on our fishing: nothing Wed, one "fish-on take down" Thursday but just as I got the pole in-hand and felt the fish shake, it was off...we did see 2 nice fish netted up river near the Siuslaw Marina and a Jack lost at the boat in that area. also seeing some large fish now on the sonar, so it is on and getting crowded!

Thanks for the update!!

Boated a 20# near the CG station and lost a big one under the 101 bridge today. Not a lot of fish yet but they are definitely starting to show up.

A buddy boated one near the marina yesterday. Wish our boat was not broken this year :( Really bumbed out. After putting 3 in the boat 2 years ago, and not getting anything but missed fish last year... and now a broken boat, it hurts! but it's okay. Thanks for the updates tho. Might book a guide.

nice job Mike!

we fished upstream, from the crane/barge to the railroad bridge and the bite was NOT on early (6am to 11am). no action and we did not see any boats even hook up.

heading out Tuesday, still working to tag our first ever King....cheers, roger

Hells yeah mike! great to hear. I'll be out next month I hope.

Did you get an outboard for your drifter Jeanna?

Negatory. Or well...I HAVE an outboard...I just need to get my boat titled and registered, and I was going to do that this week but I've misplaced my bill of sale paperwork. I've moved a couple times in the three years since i bought it...and...well.... hmmm. Wish I knew where that "safe place" was.

I know that feeling.... it sucks! I hope you find it soon. Let me know if you do make it over here with boat. If you want we can take out my crab gear & put some of the lil buggers in your freezer. LOL

It surely is not on fire yet. The ODFW checker at the dock said she had only checked 3 other fish besides the 2 that I got. But one of those was 41". I am guessing a good 30#. I saw the old guy catch it all by himself in a 12' fold up boat. Was quite the amazing show!

slow Monday afternoon and reports of no bite in the morning; we are seeing just some small groups of big fish moving up but lots of empty water between.

Monday there were some very big fish between the bridge and wood post wing dams, then we marked nothing all the way down to the CG and then we cruised up to the railroad bridge marked basically nothing big, the fish up there late last week have moved on....

going to be busy here for Labor Day weekend but might still be mostly crab getting cleaned at the launch....

...looking for our DVD of "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", so I can get the address of the nut farm (to get some salmon fishing tips).

by the dune below the bridge, soft hook-up on the trailing hook, big fish, around 30#, twice under the boat but no problems, and a few nice deep runs, but this was our first time netting a big King, and I got the front up out of the water but my wife hit it square in the side with the front of the net and the top hook caught the net as flipped away and broke the line (20#) between the hooks....no second chance with these guys.

so I am done fishing, until sunrise on Wednesday....

also, there was definitely a good group of nice fish in the stretch below the bridge but not many on down to the CG, and no other action for us after the failure, we had our chance...

Don't give up brother. I too have had my moments where I wanted to throw in the towel. Persistance will pay off. You are hooking fish. That is like 90% of the battle. Now you just have to close the deal.

Sounds pretty exciting anyway!

Net tip that helps in some situations. If you're on the kicker motor, have it in forward- slow as it'll go and have the netter in the back of the boat. The angler up front will cause the fish to "swim along" with the boat when it's tired enough. have the net in the water and when the fish is just in front of the net have the angler drop pressure on the fish and it'll drop right into the net bag. That's the theory anyway.

Best luck Wed, it's just a matter of time.

ps. is it snaggy below the bridge this year?

I thought that was you, but I wasn't sure. We were slowly motoring downstream in the boat we just got done building. We motored right between you and the fold up boat ( 24ft boat white and alum color with small house on it ). That guy lives out by me on siltcoos. He catches a LOT of fish out of that thing.
