Simpson Reef 4/20: I don't remember ordering a 'cab'...

I took a sunrise pedal to Simpson Reef today in conditions that intentionally took me out of my comfort zone. I was rewarded with a water level whale encounter, 4 large Blacks came home with me, and I caught my first big fish in the salt.

Working this fish up from 70' down I really thought it was my first Ling but it ended up being about a 15# Cabazon, a real tank of a fish that totally filled my 'coho' net and then swam happily back to the bottom after I informed him that it wasn't July 1 yet...:D cheers, roger

Do you put in at sunset bay to get to Simpson Reef? We've been thinking about a camping trip to the state park there in May.

Good going roger!

correct, it is about 2 miles south to Simpson Reef, with plenty of good fishing between the bay and reef, but the reef area is famous for big lings/cabs and loads of big rockfish (also whales and sharks)...there is also good fishing straight out of Sunset Bay along Baldwin Rock.

the State Park is excellent, yurts, tent sites, and hook-up sites, and a nice cleaning station that is used heavily by clam diggers...cheers, roger

FYI- the GoPro wide angle lenses are great for close up and on the boat stuff but distance looks, well more distant- I was having a conversation with kayak to the right of the whale, which spouted first just left of him and then headed past me, it spouted probably 5 times then was gone..it was much closer than it looks...:D

Roger always fun to see your vids, love that smile.

thanks Dana, I just finished the sonar fixture for my i11s inflatable so the next decent ocean day (swells 3' or less), I am heading out ocean fishing pedaling it.

That might be a fun video. I'm prepared for either "wow, this boat is so cool out in the ocean" or "oops, I'm never doing this again"....on the good side, I have already tested out how easy it is to climb back on it from the water...:D

FYI on my approach to ocean safety in a kayak: I did a 'signal check' with CG Coos Bay as I headed out of Sunset Bay, confirming I could reach them 'loud and clear', plus you can see in the video that my radio is clipped to and leashed to my PFD, and I also leash myself to the kayak with one of those retracting dog leash things. Ocean was 52F, so obviously wearing my dry suit....cheers, roger
