Drove to oxbow park today , to wet my line, not even hoping to catch a fish, maybe a early steelhead, Fished for 1 hour, On first cast I had a golden small spoon, I never used spoons before. It looked like a trout spoon. First cast 10 seconds later fish on, first I thought steel, then saw the surfaced fish and realized it was coho, 10 mins later it gave up and I safely removed the hook, it was bright red native male, about 20 pounds! I was using my float okuma celioe medium light steelhead rod, and not even 1 bite after that, surprised there's still coho in the river. No pictures , because I was fishing alone and kept the fish in the water and quick release. I liked the spoon idea and going to try them for steelhead, tomorrow or sunday I will visit deschutes river near kahneetah, maybe I will have some luck , checked regs coho and steelhead are open. anyone target them in that area? Whats your favorite was to use spinners or spoons,

Spoons are a great way, to cover holding water and pockets, that other methods can't get to. Little Cleo's are the best...especially if you can find, the old-school originals. I find them at flea markets, thrift shops, yard sales, etc.

Try to fish them near the bottom and let them "swing" naturally in the current rather than simply cast and retrieve.

Bill Herzog wrote a great little book on spoons and how to fish them. (amato publications). They have been a great tool for pulling steelhead out of the Sandy and up on the Salmon when you used to be allowed to fish it. They are enjoyable to fish with, not a lot of gear to tie up!

Agree 100%. Wouldn't hurt to get yourself, a copy.

Absolutely. It helped me to finally get out of the steelhead doldrums.

I rarely fish the Sandy, but a couple of years ago, a friend caught a bright coho in the Clack in January.

Indeed, a good book on the art of spoon fishing. Found my copy on ebay for a very reasonable price. Spoon Fishing for Steelhead by Bill Herzog

Awesome! Carp, not sure if you fished the D or not, but it's been a crappy steelhead year. I have, however, been killing it for trout in the Maupin area, jimmy legs w dropper to caddis pupa, october caddis, prince...Fished it the last couple weekends and was super productive, lots of bigger fish

I fished today on deschutes, right after warm springs casino, caught bunch of whitefish, and a coho. Coho still open till December, took a couple whitefish for the smoker. as well as the coho. The big whitefish was 20 inches, about 3-4 pounds. Never caught a big one before.
