Am I dreaming or can I get a quality rod (not the reel or otherwise) for $180 or less?

Yes, you can.... There are several places that have them and I'm sure there is even a member here who has one to sell.... Hint, Hint.

I bought one from W.W. Griggs a while back and it was great and I paid less than $100 for it. Others here will have more info for you.

I'm *certainly* open to buying one from a fellow OFFer. I just don't want to have to buy one NOW and LATER if I can just get something good that will last.

Open to any OFFers out there!

Obviously, I'll be looking for a 9+ ft rod with a 8wt+ line tolerance. Thanks folks!

I like to look at the consignment selection at the fly shops. I've found some great deals on rods being sold on consignment.

My current 8wt with large arbol reel cost me $185. Rod was consigned and the reel was new.

Of course that is after I lost an unused 8wt that cost more than the above rod and reel combined :(

I know that sinklines was selling his rod. It was a pretty nice one. I think he was selling it for like $150.

I have looking at several different rods lately as I am about to get my first s&s setup. there are some pretty nice rods out there within that price range man!! :D

That's very encouraging. I'm sure we've all seen the $1k+ prices one can pay for a good rod. Frankly, I just don't eat that much fish. ;)

I do appreciate quality though. I'm glad to hear that I'm not doomed to the Bi-Mart value isle for my price range.

Echo.. ST.Criox.. the lami showroom in woodland.. Okuma Guide select.. craigslist..

I just drove by the Lami showroom the other day. Pretty good deals up there?

He said $180 and under or I would have linked the Ion for sure!

I have the TFO Signature 9' 8wt I linked and have nothing but good things to say about it.. FWIW

I have a Redington RS4 4 piece 10' 7 wt I'll sell for $125 brand new. Excellent rod, but just picked up a Sage RPL to use instead.

I sincerely appreciate that but I think I'm going to need something a little beefier for salmon. Probably a 10wt

Yeah, he did say $180. But I figured a little pillow room wouldn't hurt right, hehehe .

@pinky - I am just about to get an Echo Ion 10' 8wt. I will let you know what I think as soon as I can. :D

Chum and Coho your fine with it. A 10 wt will take the fun out of steelhead, and sap the strength from your arm after casting all day.

If I were you, I would plan on 2 rods. A 9-10 wt for Chinook, and a 7 wt for steelhead, coho, and chum.

7 wt for steelhead, coho, and chum.

Personally, I would disagree. Too light for winters, imo.

That's fine by me.=) I've landed plenty on them.

Wouldn't do it when it's a raging torrent, but that's a whole different story altogether.

7wt is also on the lighter side for coho, ive had some..namely the one in my avatar take me to my backing in 10 seconds on my 8wt and fight for 10+ minutes
