Salmon limit question

I must admit that I frown every time someone posts a regulation question that they could just look up themselves but I am a little unsure on this one and would like to know how everyone else interprets this one.

Sep. 1st is the opener on the ocean for the non selective salmon season with a limit of 2 per day.

Can a person tag 2 fish on the ocean and then still fish inland waters?
Or is it 2 per day total for ALL waters?

There seems to be conflicting information here or at least they way I am reading it.

pretty sure it's just 2 per day wherever you happen to get them, but I don't know.

I've always interpreted a "daily bag limit" as just that; only 2 per day, no matter how many water bodies you fish.

It would be akin, to catching a daily limit of 5 trout (maybe 3 from a stream, and 2 from a lake or another stream). But, you cannot keep 5 from a stream, and then legally go and catch 5 MORE from another stream or lake.

Here is how it works up here:
Bag limit is the number of fish you can catch in a day, if the ocean says 2 adult and the river you want to fish says 2 adult then you can NOT fish the river. If the river has a larger bag limit then you can.
i.e. You catch 2 fish in the ocean then go to a river with a 3 fish limit. You can fish for 1 fish in the river.

Another thing to keep in mind, again, WA rules but should be the same; If you can keep Chinook in the ocean and the river you want to fish is closed to Chinook you do not want to have the Chinook with you when you go to fish the river. The reason is obvious, fish and game won't take the line "But I caught it in the ocean, see I marked it as Marine Area 4". Same would go for clipped or unmarked fish.

Best advice, call ODFW and find out for sure.

Well, what Zone are you fishing in after being in the Ocean?

I believe all zones in the 'Catch Limits' says 2 Salmon/Steelhead per day in the aggregate.

Good question. Thanks for the information.

Here is the "REAL" good question. I am going to call ODFW on this one today.

Tomorrow is the opener of the NON-SELECTIVE coho season in the ocean. You are allowed to keep 2 salmon per day of any combination of chinook or coho, hatchery or wild. Do those count towards your seasonal aggregate limit of wild coho?

No. It's a different game in the pond than the rivers. But I'd double check because, well, I'm braindead sometimes.

I spoke with some dingbat at the ODFW and she said that ALL wild coho count toward your yearly aggregate limit no matter where you catch them.

You can take all 5 from the ocean and then you are done for the year, or 2 from rivers such as the Siuslaw and still have 3 left for other waters or a number of other combinations. But all said and done you cannot exceed 5.

Sounds like a second call is in order. Hopefully you can talk to a different person & see if you still get the same answer

I was actually just working on that but have been unsucessful so far.

Figures...they are a government agency after all

Ok, here you go. I just spoke with Laura Jackson at the ODFW Regional office in Roseburg. She has informed me that ocean caught fish DO NOT affect your aggregate seasonal bag limit for the NW & SW zones.
