Salmon counts

So I was just wondering if anyones else is starting to get concerned about the salmon counts dropping off coming over the willamette falls. I sure hope that it is just a bad couple of days and the counts start to pick back up again if not fising might start to get hard for us average people.

I am thinking the counts falling off had a little to do with water temprature droping. I think it should pick back up. Last year we did not get the warmer water at the falls until June so we are looking good as long as it picks back up.

I think there is still a lot of salmon to come, I think the run will be there.

Gets later every year but so far has been pretty close to last year. Just means brighter fish later in the season

Where do you guys get your reports of numbers and all of that? I'm looking for a place to watch for things like CFS and water temps along with fish numbers.

yup was thinking same thing myself and as of right now our counts are better then like last 6 or so years but the way they were moving over then dropping off as the water temp was still the same but just yhe flow increased was sure hoping that it was not going to be a bummer year

the run is awful !

i looked back at the count for 2002 and in may the lowest daily count was 651 and about 85% or more had 1500-2000 a day.

And it's still the beggining of june!! June-July is when the majority of the fish come through! The run is not awful, it's on e of the best so far in many years, with a lot bigger fish. It is still just getting started.....

Dtikey, i don't think there is going to be anything to worry about this year bro. I'm sure this rain will trigger more fish to move through. There is gunna be a lot of fresh fish late in the summer this year.

a lot of jack salmon, means a lot of big fish.

Yeah Im not worried just wanted to start a thread about it to see what others were thinking. As I said above we are doing pretty good compairativly from past counts.Bet I got people thinking though and started to question themselves

Only problem is in the past the water is too cold in May for the fish to come over the falls in large numbers and it hits the magical upper 50s temp in June. So the fish take off up river. This year the water was much warmer in May and it brought a good push of fish through. Now the water is still pretty warm and if it goes up much more the numbers of fish will die off like it did the last two weeks. Salmon are very temperature driven and the temps have been perfect and the numbers of fish have not. Hopefully the temp stays in the upper 50s for a few more weeks and the fish numbers continue to climb. Last year almost 20,000 fish came through in June. If we get the same it will be great, if it drops off in June it will suck! There are good numbers of fish up river right now because of that big early push.

Think ya got another wave headed your way. I fish the Columbia, Rainier/Longview area and we are having a hard time finding steelhead. The Chinooks keep hitting our gear. Hope it's still that way come the 16th! Heartbreaking having to release a nice finclipped!

boy I bet that sucks having to release them but I thank you for your ethics and obeying the laws of nooks being closed thier and steel head stalkers yes I agree I like to see the water between 54-58 degrees and when that temp you can fish for them most anyway you want because they will take lures and bait not just select one or the other
