Pontoons and winter steelhead yarnies!

We headed to one of our favorite little rivers to do a nice float in the pontoons! We found some fish and the weather was incredible! Fishing was painfully slow and from a guide we talked to the slowest it has been the whole year. The time we decide to fish and the whole river shuts down. Oh well, we sometimes have that effect on rivers. :D

We were not sure why some people put their rod in mouth when posing for pics so Daniel thought he would try it. Turns out its works for gear rods too. Perfect day on the water!

My turn. This fish put up a great fight and worked hard to get 75+ miles up river.

I sound like a broken record but UV yarn balls got the job done. Out of the 7 fish we hooked all but one were on SS UV Yarn! We fish a lot of different things through a hole too.

Its nice to have something that not everyone on the river is using especially when fishing is a little slow.

Perfect ending to a great trip. You can check out the video on our website.

sounds like a good day on the water. I have always wanted to drift my pontoon down a river for steelhead. I still have not caught any fish on yarn balls. Only my jigs, maybe i dont fish them correctly.

My guess would be you don't fish them first through a good hole because you do not have confidence in them. ;) Also, you probably do not fish them very long before throwing your trusted jig back on. Its hard to fish something long enough to actualy give it a chance when you don't have a lot of confidence in it. Trust me they work, we have landed over 80 steelhead this winter on them alone! Some days they want jigs, some days bait and then others they want yarnies. We just fish them under floats like you would a jig. This time of year the yarnies really start to shine because the fish will be seeing more and more single eggs in the river.

Under a bobber huh? Do you use weight to help get it down? Or what? I've only ever tried bouncing them off the bottom, its how my brother fishes em.

I use a sliding float setup. I also add three small split shot to the leader to help the yarnies get down along with the main weight under my float. Drift fishing them works really good as well. We do a lot of side drifting yarnies with great results!

Alright. I will have to try that out.

Use them, they work!!

awesome fish chad..

Nice post! I love floating the river in a pontoon boat it's a blast even when the fishing is slow. Nice work.

I have always had better luck drifting yarnies, but I have caught a couple floating them too. All around a pretty solid tactic to use.... Great looking fish to BTW! :)
