ODFW Coastal Coho call...

got a call back from ODFW on the Siuslaw coho count blip earlier in the Coastal season, the '404' week for anyone following this coho fishery...

they have reviewed this data point several times, due to the multiplier added to adjust counted fish to actual predicted catch, the actual count that week was just 64 and it seems that most of it was in the jaws and they also feel that some of it could have been ocean coho that were reported incorrectly....

best news is this: they are working towards getting the Coastal Coho fishery in the rivers and lakes approved as part of permanent regulations with a 5 fish per year season limit.

no more quotas and counting/estimates for locations, no more 2 fish from this group of rivers, 1 fish from these rivers,....just catch them where you want, following a 1 fish per day, 5 per year restriction. woo hoo!:clap::clap:

Great call Roger. I knew there was no way that 404 was correct.
Thanks for the update.

I would say the 404 was mostly correct based on multiplier used that week and on extra fish being caught in the jaws that were probably not heading up river yet but rather ocean fish moving in and out of the jaws....ODFW guy was great, he also said that it was very difficult counting that week with river coho just opening and ocean coho still underway and drawing lots of boats...best news is that we could see an end to this whole counting/quota stuff soon...he also answered my question on coho jacks in NW zone, 15" is not a fixed minimum size according to him.

Good to hear the coho will be open on a permanent basis!

Thanks for posting,

Really? 1 a day 5 a season? When? That would be sweet!!!

I sure hope they decide to propose it to NOAA next year....my feeling is that much will depend on the spawning ground surveys this year, they need strong evidence that the limited coho catch is not putting at risk getting plenty of fish back to obtain full seeding...

woohooo. just in time for the 2014 10% cutback
