Hello again fellow OFFers! I was wondering if you are aloud BY LAW to park on the side of the road on either side of North Schmeer Road.

Here is the direct link to the google maps address and satellite view:

I see a couple of spots that somewhat look like parking spots on North Schmeer Road between North Denver Avenue and I-5, but I don't want to ask a cop because I'm just asking for trouble.

I want to bank fish on the Columbia Slough.

Here is a link to current Oregon law regarding where parking is unlawful. You should also check City of Portland Parking Ordinances. Most municipalities adopt State parking regulations, but they can also add further restrictions/details as they see fit.

As a former police officer I think it sad that you believe that asking cops questions is, "...asking for trouble". A sentiment that is certainly yours to hold, but cops do not exist for any other reason than to aid the citizenry.

alright, sorry about my assumptions with the police. I had a police note on my car once for parking in a LEGAL parking spot once, when it was a neighbor that didn't like me who was making a complaint. I've been searched by a policeman for fitting a suspect description in a mcdonalds, that was totally embaressing. My cop neighbor used to light illegal fireworks. I'll just say that "some" cops are looking for trouble in the wrong places.

So far, you are very helpful as a former policeman, thank you for that. I've read that stuff from your link before, but the only thing I think I understand is that if you have looked at the spots where I wanted to park at, you could see some areas where it would be safe for me to park and not be in harms way of traffic; but I think according by law, I am not aloud to park there to go fishing because of the white lines? Unless I was working for government, or emergency, etc.

I know tons of people who want to fish at these spots if available, so I think I'm not just speaking for myself; so it would be nice if you can justify these parking spots and help us out since you understand them better than I do.

You are correct, and I was going to put up a quick addendum stating how it only takes one bad apple to spoil the barrel (or whatever apples are shipped in these days). I know I broke a few laws in my law enforcement days (stupid things like the fireworks, all done far from the public eye). Of course whether I was far from the public eye at these times is absolutely not a factor excusing my actions.

I saw the white line, which does not indicate a parking restriction (these are typically posted by sign or by a curbing painted in yellow or red). As long as you are able to park safely a few feet behind the white line you are ok, but I couldn't see what the dirt or sawdust area beyond the white line indicate (a trail or roadway? A privately owned area?).

Your best bet? Telephone or e-mail the traffic/parking unit of PPB and ask. You can ask for the name of the Officer you speak with and write it down along with the date and time of the call. This will assist if you should receive a citation.

Good luck,,and welcome to OFF,

Eamon

So I did go there and asked a fellow officer if I'm aloud to park there. He also said it was alright, and he also said the exact thing you said EJ about parking a couple feet away from the white line to be safe.

When I set up my stuff to fish there, the bank access was horrible but....I FORGOT THE BAIT I FORGOT THE BAIT I FORGOT THE FUDGING BAIT!!!!!! Drove 30 minutes away and I forgot the fudging bait...

It didn't matter though because if I did catch a monster fish, there would be absolutely no way of landing it because of the steep bank. So I left...

BUT IT DEFINITELY looks like a promising place to go CARP FISHING but you need a smelting net...good luck for those of you who are going to try because it does look promising
