Looking to buy a smoker.

And No, not that one posted the other day by Raincatcher.
My needs are much more modest, not to mention my means.
When I moved to nOr. I was forced to leave my Old Smoky barrel smoker behind due to lack of space.
Not as bad as it sound as it was pretty well used up. The bottom was going and the chip tray as well as the racks were just about gone.
I've done some online looking and so far the best I've found within reach for me Dollar wise is the Masterbuilt 30'' electric. Best price I've found is $189 from Wallyworld.
I'm a firm believer in electric smokers and the digital control smoker seems even better.
Still I'm open to suggestions, other than that I should buy locally. That's not gonna happen unless the local price is close.

I have a Weber smoky mountain and it works great. It is very easy to control temperature and depending on what size you get the amount of meat that can be smoked at the same time is incredible. Also once you have your fire started it is relatively low maintenance.

December 2014 I got the Masterbuilt 20070411 30-Inch Top Controller Electric Smoker with Window and RF Controller from Amazon for $238 and absolutely love it. We cook almost all our salmon in it (adding a touch of smoke), plus lamb and other roasts, plus all our smoking...love it. roger

looks like same price at Walmart:

Yeah, but that one is outside my budget.
I need to stay as far below $200 as possible.
The Masterbuilt 20070910 30'' seems to be the same basic smoker without the glass door, meat probe, and remote.[h=1][/h]

the controller on the top of that one looks different than on mine, so I can't be sure if that is an earlier version. if it works as good as mine does, then no worries.

the window is really nice but certainly not required; I find mine easy to keep clean by giving it a quick cleaning each time I use it...

I have a Traerger and love it don't know if one would fit you're budget tho.

I've always use vertical smokers for the most part.
Although at one time I did have a side box wood burning smoker that was large enough to smoke a whole deer and a couple of turkeys at the same time. Needless to say it really didn't get a lot of use.
I'm also only interested in electric.
Then as I mentioned before, $200 is my upper limit.

I think my daughter ordered one from Walmart yesterday. They have the one with the window in the door but no remote (not sure I even understand why you would want a remote controlled smoker), for $198 you just have to wait for it. Which is fine considering I can't pay for it until the end of the month.
I hope I get the chance to smoke a salmon this year. It would be nice to get that skunk smell off of me.

there is a meat probe in the oven and the remote displays that temp, plus it displays the oven temp and allows you to adjust that, so while you are cooking/smoking, it lets you monitor the progress and adjust the oven temp from the house while the smoker is out in a shed/garage/deck...cheers, roger

Roger;

I am absolutely struggling to stop me from picking one up like yours, wife's birthday is coming up and may be it will be a good gift. There is always a chance that she will think that it is just another excuse for me to eat more and get fat, but I think I will take that risk. Space is a challenge, only place I can put it is in the garage. Approx how much space will I need to keep free around it? Will it be a bit difficult to maintain temperatures in an unheated garage in the winter?

Cheers
M

I was under the impression that you could set the temp you wanted to smoke at and it digitally controled to stay where you set it.
rom the ad blurb; This Digital Electric Smoker has a digital control panel that allows you to set the temperature anywhere between 100 and 275 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also conveniently set the timer for up to 24 hours.

That was the main reason I was looking at these. Keeping the temp where I wanted it was was always a problem with my old smoker. Had to be monitoring it all day as the outside temperature changed. Constantly adjusting it up or down accordingly.

Yeah, that's always a good idea. Buy the wife an appliance for her B-day. Heck, I haven't been married for 35 years and even I know how that works out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twivg7GkYts

Hey Tom, I started conditioning her long before we got married. She expects nothing but such things from me, I use these occasions to buy expensive stuff that'll get me a clump on the head on another day.

Go ahead montym.....buy the smoker.....it's okay. Might want to pick up some jerky while you're at it just in case you end up with Fido and the boys. I love that video man...that's the stuff. We've all been there!

Found a little used smoker on Craigslist yesterday.
The seller had replaced it with a Traeger.
Was asking $125 but he sold it to me for the $100 I had on hand.
Masterbuilt Sportsman Elite 30'' electric smoker with a meat probe.
Cabela's sells it for $230. Also it came with a cover, and two bags of wood chips.
Can't wait to put it to use.

The Masterbuilt seems to have a loyal following and it is probably the best in your price range.
Good luck with yours.

Here is a good article that describes temps and smoking salmon.
http://honest-food.net/2012/08/12/how-to-smoke-salmon-recipe/
His temp regimen is probably the shortest duration for properly smoked salmon.
My smoke sessions will go 14 hours or more.
Some of the smokers in this thread can't run cool enough to properly smoke salmon....they are cooking it.

If it's light pink and has that fugly white curd you are cooking it.

I hope I get a chance to try this smoker on Salmon.
But first I have to catch one.
At the moment, I'm smoking some spareribs.

I have a pretty good rub.
But I never use sauces, Too much sugar in them and I'm diabetic.
I also have to cook them for extra time, My daughter I live with has problems digesting any meat unless it's cooked long enough to fall apart.
