Went out to day with SteelmonKiller and NoFishWilliams(lurker) and hit the zoo that is the Willamette under the 205 bridge in OC. SLOW day.
Nothing really happened for the first few hours. Saw probably 100 boats and 3 fish caught one was a sturgeaon.
Then around 4:30 we started jigging 3 oz, pline tuna style jigs(looked like fish). Anyway it only took about 5 min of that and WHAM!
I hooked into probably the biggest springer Ive ever hooked. It was peeling drag and as we chugged after it everyone in eye sight (50 people at that moment ) starting pointing to the two sealions that where headed after it. No wonder it was such a hot fish.
When they were done with me I had nothing but 100 feet of line left.

...well thats it.....:(

A lurker huh ha we will get more. Was a killer fight and a good story for the books!

Jarred! Looking forward to a bangin week!

We will get back out there. I am thinking tomorrow evening i will go if your down.

Oregon fishing report 4/26/13
Posted on April 25, 2013 by tgfdoug
Willamette Valley/Metro- Willamette River spring chinook anglers are enjoying moderate success from the Multnomah Channel up to Oregon City. Although the catching is just average at best, it hasn’t hampered the effort. Monday provided a pretty decent bite at the head of Multnomah Channel, with some boats getting two to four fish. The Portland Harbor has been spotty giving up a handful of fish one day and being challenging the next. Willamette Park and Sellwood are mostly slow with the odd average day. Oregon City is getting busy and the fish are there, but so are the sea lions and some days they seem to be getting 75% of the fish hooked.

TM, congrats on changing your technique and hooking up, that is quite an accomplishment!

I can only imagine how frustrating it is to lose a fish like that. I love the lower Willamette, but this time of year the abundance of fur bags makes me only fish it occasionally and is why I am interested in learning the upper river. I was worried last time I was sturgeon fishing on the lower river that a sea lion would make a grab for a fish. I was extremely low key each time I hooked up. For the most part I kept my rod low to the water and acted disinterested when I was fighting fish. I still had sea lions come check me out several times - swim within 30 or 40' and crane their necks to look at me closely.

I have read that the percentage of hooked fish that have been taken by sea lions is really high this year. I guess it is a combination of a lot of sea lions and a smaller run.
