kings are stacked in areas of deep water..........won't bite

We live along the Coos River Esturary, and I can tell you the kings are stacked in areas of deep water with in a mile of two either way of the Mill Casino. But.................they won't bite, and I've tried lots of methods. They just sit there from 20' to 40' deep in certain spots which fish finders pick up. Plug cut herring has no effect and makes them puke!

My brother the fish wizzard says use sand shrimp and bobber 18" off the bottom. I'm trying this today on the incoming tide.

I see the same thing on the Siuslaw river right now. Lots of kings that won't bite. I think they want rain. Some dudes using bobber and eggs were getting a few, but no luck for trollers, so your bro might be right.

I saw a guy with what looked to be about a 30" coho on the slaw on Saturday, and he was using a slip bobber and sand shrimp. Everyone else who was trolling didn't have much luck from what I saw.

Have you tried steak n eggs or prawns or au natural sand shrimp yet?
How about a small squid head? I sneak out quite a few bonus bites on squid heads under a float or backbounced.

I'll see if I can find some at the fish market.

I tried bobber and eggs for about an hour and I think it needs more time but these other choices might provide hope. Try each bait on bobber and eggs.

I rigged up the big long and black bobber that uses a 3 ounce weight and ran the bobber stop down to 30 feet debth and drifted with the current. Will try again today.

the boats that we are seeing catch fish on the Slaw seem to be following the same pattern: very slow trolling over fish with cut herring being mooched up and down near the bottom...the fish are not showing much interest in lures/spinners or in herring trolled by at higher speed with poles locked in holders. some rain would be nice.

Thanks for the report. I hope they're still hitting the eggs tomorrow. My smoker is tired of beef and pork products.

Eggs and sand shrimp, (steak and eggs) both at the same time could do the trick. I know it makes all the difference to have them together here when the kings have lockjaw. Also try a dark jig or a pink jig tipped with sand shrimp. And DEEP for sure, Even in fast water I try to fish 6-14 inches off the bottom. And get it down as fast as you can so it can settle and drift longer.

Slow troll. I know of 8 fish for 1 boat on Thursday. 6 in the early am and 2 in the evening.

i think people here in the valley call shrimp/eggs diff. then other people we always call them shrimp cocktail. but my little bro has been killing thiem on that and shrip tipped juigs under a float. on the salmon river.
