On Sunday I took a friend (Prayson) who was visiting from North Carolina out to try and catch his first sturgeon and from a kayak to boot. He was in my new Frontier 12 and I was in my trusty Outback. We ended up having a bit of a slow day but did manage to land 9 sturgeon between the two of us. Also, being a fair guy I have to admit that Prayson caught 5 to my 4. Unfortunately we did not get any big fish, the biggest of the day was a 41" fish that I caught Some of the others approached keeper size, but we did not measure any of the others.
Conditions were definitely tough on Sunday with an upriver wind and not much current. We spent a good deal of effort in trying to keep the two kayaks in fishing position without interfering with each other. We were sharing my anchor using a jig I had thought up the day before. In the one spot where there was a bit current it worked nicely. For most of the day it was a tangle of ropes and PVC pipe that at least kept the kayaks somewhat apart.
We started the day near where we launched at George Rogers park. In the first 5 hours or so we landed 7 sturgeon including the 41" fish. We had quite a few bites and missed several fish as well. I kept waiting for the current and the bite to pick up with the outgoing tide but neither ever really did.
Given that the fishing was not red hot and that Prayson wanted to see a bit more of the river we decided to head upstream about a mile and a half or so to where there is a bit more current. We found some current at the new spot and caught two fish in pretty short order. I was thinking that we were finally going to have a good bite. Unfortunately, other than a few more missed bites that was it for that spot.
After that we made our way back downstream, stopping briefly to anchor up one more time, but that spot did not produce any fish. With the boat traffic and the wind combining to make the conditions pretty tough we decided to call it a day.
Overall, it was not the best day ever, but at least I got give my friend a taste of what kayak sturgeon fishing is like. Here are a few pics from the trip.
Here is Prayson fighting a fish from the Frontier (note the cushy swivel seats):
The fruits of his labor (like a good NC boy he is lipping it like a bass),
Quick John, take a picture before it ... never mind
Here I am with the 41"er.
