Seems a good excuse to chase steelhead!
Ran into patrickhvr...so now I know where he's nabbing all those steelhead! Thanks for the yarn...I gave it a go for awhile, but no action.
Then, ran into waco and his buddy, Daniel. Good to run into you guys again. Daniel showed me a video of his wife's first steelhead. That was a great video and super nice fish!
Anyway, on Thursday I had been down there and spotted a steelhead rise to the surface, then settle back down. I launched a spoon and perfect cast; the spoon swung slowly right over its head. My spoon stopped and I felt a slight tug...yank! Got it! This fish went absolutely crazy...erupted from the water, then charged right at me. I'm reeling as fast as I can, then it leaps again, turns around and runs from me, jump, runs, jumps. After 6 sets of aerial acrobats, my spoon had enough and was spit out. Cool to watch , but a bit depressing. I have never had a fish leap more than about 3 times and this one spent more time in the air than the water after I hooked it!
I was hoping for a bit better today, but after a long day of searching, finding plenty of fish, I couldn't get any biters. When I ran into waco, they hadn't gotten any takers yet either. Unfortunately, patrickhvr had long since left as his rod busted first thing in the day.
Finally, after I had been up and down the river, around 2 o'clock, I headed a little lower and switched up the game a bit with a spinner. I had seen two fish move up and I aimed upstream and across...swung it back down, felt a bump and yank! I felt a little wiggle and my line felt a slight resistance as it moved toward me...is this a trout? After a few feet of movement toward me, a fish erupts from the water...that ain't no simple trout....steel baby! It then turns and runs, stripping line from my reel. Another couple sets of acrobats as it moves downriver, then finally I'm able to bring it back, bit by bit.
This pretty native was the only catch of the day:
