I got two cast out of a spoon

I hate loosing spoons two cast out of a little cleo 2/5 and wrapped aroung a log, 4 bucks gone almost as bad as playing vegas. I also lost 3 yarnball set ups rigged with gammi hooks and that was the first 15 minutes. it wouldn't bug me so much if I could actully catch a steelhead but unless they drain the rivers my chances are not good.

I really can't figure out why, I have put tons of time into it, I have really nice lamiglas rods hand made in woodland washington( I know it's not the gear but the person behind it) so I can feel the bite, I have used corkies. yarnballs, pink worms,on bobber off bobber, nightmare jigs, maglip plugs, eggs, sand shrimp, little cleo in all colors ,blue fox all colors, in a boat, on the bank, you name it I have tried it. Now I can catch redsides all day long I just don't get it.

I like your screenname. My first reel was a D.A.M. Quick 330; on an Eagle Claw rod.

Sorry about your losses. Hopefully you'll get some steel sooner rather than later.

Don't quit yet, your fortunes are probably about to change. My stats for this morning- lost two lures ($10) and 0 for 1 on the steelhead. At least I got a quick look at him. It was a good day by my standards. Hang in there.

Yeah, you just gotta hand in there. Losing a crap load of gear/$$$ is part of the steelheading game. I am 0-3 for steelhead this year, and prolly have about $300 on the bottom already. I am a lure junky.

Keep putting the time you can in on the river and you will be rewarded soon Damnquick. With nearly 7,000 steelhead over the falls, there will be some good numbers in our area very very soon. Keep at it. The redsides are kickin a55 this year.

You now Ray it took me 2 years to get my first steelhead on my own. I was handed fish off by my stepdad and uncle and grandpa but just couldnt hook my own till one day two fish on my own out of the canal on camp creek road. I was 12 when this happened and I am 34 now and believe me I still go through lots of gear.Yes this was a long time ago but still sometimes it takes handfulls of patience. Everyone who fishes looses tackle thats just part of it but let me make this suggestion to you.Dont buy name brand spoons. They make cheap spoons that are same as steelies and cleos and hammered or not plus all the colors for fraction of price.I would put better hooks on myself but I hope this helps. I will get ahold of you next time I go up mac and try to help you out but not sure yet when I will be going there.

I keep trying to give dti more rep points, but it says I must spread it around more? I'll try to give some to someone else and then to you dti. Anyway, you deserve it with the info and help to people here.

Just keep at it damquick, if you have a boat maybe use that more, you'll be able to recover your lost gear much easier than from the bank.

Best,

Yes, I have become adept at moving fishing funds around in a manner that more or less successfully hides my gear losses from my wife. My personal record? I think it was 7 very nice spinners and spoons on a bad morning on the Santiam (about $42). Karma has a way of coming back around though, and I have retrieved as many nice bits of tackle lost by others.

In regard to the catching, I have come to consider my fishing time/money as an investment into maintaining inner peace as I spend my long, tranquil hours staring into the water doing absolutely nothing.

Things will improve (I tell myself this often).

no problem Ray and didn't get in the way at all.Looked like a pro out there. Now just put what you learned to use and be no time at all and be smacking the steelies.Hope to see you on the river more and with fish on the stinger

Well there you go, I think fishing with others that have some catching under their belt is a bigger help than the nicest gear. Its amazing some of the simple things either you can learn or they might see your doing wrong. Not to mention its pretty fun to meet and fish with new people if you can. I also think fishing with a guide is invaluable if you can do it. I've only been out once with a guide for steel and it was a big help I use that info every time I go out. Hasn't exactly made me a fish killer but upped my game for sure. And don't forget how awesome it is out "there" even with out hook ups. One last thing if you don't tie up your own yarnies, corkys, and twist up your own spinners study up on that and that will help take the sting out of loosing gear to. So can less weight or slinkys for those grabby rivers.

Like DTI said the cheaper spoons will catch fish just as well as the Cleos do. I like to replace the treble hooks on spoons with a single siwash. This will help with not snagging the bottom as much and will make it harder for the fish to shake the hook loose on you. Good luck out there and tight lines!
