What if you had a tandem and put a reversible drive in the front AND back ? But you pit them in with one reversed ?

huh? it is already possible to install one drive forward and one in reverse in a tandem, we've done that, works very well fishing close to shore...

exactly, a joke explained that turns out to not make sense wasn't a joke in the first place, right?
 
Now, that's a reason to buy a Hobie as opposed to a pedal prop boat.
I predict a bunch of used regular Mirage Drives available as spares after these begin to sell on the new boats.
