I hooked up into two Summers on thursday. Both came into the net smoothley. I am hisitent to post the pictures i took because of how they turned out. I am trying to get the better pictures of them, then maybe i will feel like showing them off lol.But anyways... Just some motivation for you to get back out there (but im sure you have been due to your last reports). I know this only puts me at 7 landed for the season, which means i have 11 more to land? I know i can hook up into 11 more before mid october or early october.

4 skiens of eggs cured up, spoons, and special spinners :D lol! I am coming for you!

Excellent!

I almost halved your progress this morning, though! My wife is working today at 11:00, so I could only fish to about 9:00. At about 7:45 this morning, hooked up! You were the first person I thought of while the tugging starts ;) A bit of thrashing, then the fish heads down to the rapids. We're about 20 seconds into this fight when it flings itself out of the water while running through the rapids and spits the hook. <sigh> Bound to happen eventually as I'm 4 for 4 over the last 4 weeks, eh? And for good measure, the fish leaps one more time after it came unbuttoned just to say, "See ya!" LOL

But, keep sharp my man, another trip out, at least by tomorrow, is already in the works. :)

Oh, and your October/November comment has me wondering...are we only counting summers? If so, we're much closer...I'm at 10 summers.

This must be the prequel to the new reality show...."Spoon Wars 2013".

Oh man...you lucked out today! My daughter went to a friend's house and was going to stay until 8. Later in the afternoon, my two boys were talking about my fishing and I asked them if they wanted to see what it was about? "Sure." So, we head to the river. Now, they are 7 and 9 and I figured actually getting a steelhead was not in the cards as I attempted to show them the ropes as best they could handle.

We get to the river and I selected a spot with easy access. We walk over some rocks and it's slow going. Then, I pick a nice set of riffles and we get to work. I hand the rod to the 9 year old and I figure I'll point out where we're going to cast and I'll handle the trigger finger on the spinning reel, while he flips the rod (with a little guidance from me...my hands along his). Lure hits the water, I take up slack and he and I hold rod/reel together, letting the spoon drift along...I tell him what the rock bumps are and we work to lift the spoon a little. Rinse, repeat until we cover the section. Then we move a bit to cover the next section and switch over to the 7 year old...same thing. We work the entire riffle, alternating, then wander OFF to find a new section when it's covered.

And they are troopers. We spend about 4 hours up and down the river. They only asked once, "When are we going to catch one?" I laughed...told them that unfortunately, these fish are tough to catch and remember all those days I don't catch one...it's like this a lot. They really enjoyed the 'stealth' part of some sections where we're ducking behind bushes when cover is needed due to proximity of where the fish are probably holding. They even tucked leaves from trees and bushes into the holes of their hats...LOL. Good stuff.

So, it's tough to get a good drift going while trying to help them...even though I'm holding the rod along with them...but no worries, I expected this. What I didn't expect, happens about 6:30 p.m. The spoon is drifting...probably a little too low as we're hanging a bit in some rocks along the way, but then I feel what I first think is a rock...but it actually gives a bit, a split second after the bump, almost like when snagging up on a branch...but, there ain't no branch in the water here, as I fished this exact section this morning...same place I got a hit, in fact. In that split second of give, I pull! Of course rips the rod out of my son's hands, but there is a good reason...fish on! Steelhead jumps and I yell to my youngest to come quick!

The plan was to have both of them fight the fish, trading OFF so they both get to see/feel what these things do on the line! As the fish is running away, peeling the drag, I tell my startled 9 year old that I'm sorry for yanking so hard but it was because of the fish and I go to hand him the rod...just then slack....nothing!

Oh no! I reel in and I was disgusted with myself...broke at the knot. I can't even remember my last knot failure...total bummer. My oldest boy says, "That's OK...at least we found one. Oh, and we have one in the freezer too." LOL Yes, I guess we do.

So, rippin'...all that to say, you lucked out twice today...slightly different circumstances and my two hookups today might have meant you gained no ground :)

You still fishing the McIver area? We (well my buddy) got two out of there yesterday. All I got was a trout, but I did get it on a half green half silver Little Cleo...now why would I have thought to use that!? ;)

Great Story/Report! Yeah i lucked out! We are talking about Summer runs here. So it looks like i am still down 3!

Here is a little report. Got about 5 hours of sleep and woke up about 2 hours late of sunrise. Work at 3:30, so i figured i might as well head up river to see what it was like. On the water at about 9:30 haha. Fish the first tail out with no success. Then on down to the 2d with nothing to show. I figure that maybe the fish are holding in moderate to heavy "chop" So i make 1 cast to a spot that looked good, it just looked like it had an extra shadow in it. Made my cast start realing in and feel a bump, set the hook and a monster steelie about 29 inches or so comes flying out of the water. The hook up felt weird, and did not feel right at all, after the first jump all i see is my blade of my spinner flopping around in the dorsal fin!

the water i was fishing was on the other side of the river, i guess i casted a little too far which resulted in my spinner running across the fishes back, and having a 1/0 Siwash hook on resulted in hooking the dorsal fin! It was not cool at all, such a teaser. Big teaser... i have never managed that ever! The fish jumped like 8 times before it finaly broke off. I was depressed! not only because because it got hooked in the back bt because it stole my favorite spinner!! and it was my only one! lol.

I think i need some sleep tho, can't take typing any more right now. haaha. If i wake up in about 4 hours or so i will get 3 fish by Noon for you :D 6 days fished this week, maybe 7. My body is telling me no but my mind is telling me yes!

I bet the kids are hooked now! And about the stealthy part... I kinda keep forgetting about that part because i get so amped when i am out there and tend to spook lots o fish lol.

With the way you are hooking into them, it's makin me have to work a little harder. but i like a little competition with other steelheaders. Makes it that much more fun and intense when you are out there trying to figure these fish out.

Yep. Hit it twice this weekend and 3 hookups. Oh, and if it were me, I'd ditch the silver color in favor of darker drab right now...ask dozer what I was using today :)

That's right, rippin', total tally this weekend is 0-3. Yikes!

Had a hookup today that wrapped around a boulder and there was nothing to do but watch it peel some drag while my line was anchored to the rock, leap, then eventually break OFF.

Long day fishin' today and mojo for gettin' the fish to shore not so good these last two days. But hey, the bright side is I'm still hookin' 'em up and that seems the majority of the battle for steelhead...well, at least for me, anyway.

Sounds like both you guys are schooling me on steel! I have not caught a steelhead in a month (shhh don't tell anyone ha ha ) sounds like the action is starting to heat back up for them. Its been a weird year! This time last year i was averaging around 20 fish a month. going to have to start going back out and trying for them again... just stuck on salmon mode right now. good job though to both of you guys!

I have had 1 day where i went 0-3 last year, Hooked them all on my first 3 casts and lost them all. Those days hurt so bad! But yeah, its good to be hooking into them and defeating half of the battle. I could picture, the rock, the fish pulling line, and the fish jumping while hung up. Funny! I am thinking of buying an 8'6" okuma sst as cabelas has a few in now. The 7'6" is fun but its starting to get a little small now.

It's been fun reading your reports the last couple years and watching your progression with the spoon fishing. When i remember to see of my buddy will post the pictures of my fish on FB i will post them up here. there is even a nice shot off all 3 on the stringer that i want to post, (one being My buddys)

I wont let ya down with the pictures! I ended up waking up at 11:30am so didn't fish yesterday. Was diggin the rest tho. Hopefully will be back out in... about 5 hours if i wake up in time haha.

Each year i fish more hours and many more days a week. I seriously need to do something that involves being around fish every day.

I've been using the 8'-6" SST spinning for my spoons and it does all right. Speaking of my progression with spoons and this particular fish...

I've gotten to the point where I can cast those things just about anywhere and I hardly ever lose them these days. In fact, I only lost one yesterday, casting into all kinds of rock strewn pockets, and it was to this fish. Ironic though because I had already resigned myself to the fact that this particular spoon was lost.

I had snagged up at the beginning of the cast and couldn't dislodge it. I wrapped the line around my left hand a few times and pulled straight back. Line comes loose, but I could still feel the spoon, all right! Lucky. While I'm trying to unwrap the loops around my hand and regain control of the line with the rod, I don't quite get it all unraveled from my hand when the spoon goes below a boulder about 10 feet below me (I'm in the middle of the river, on a rock I had waded out to) and the line in the water wraps under the boulder, as I felt a tug of pressure on the hand that still had a couple loops of the line around it, dang another snag. I tried pulling with that hand again to dislodge it once again and I felt it start tugging back. The perfect irony is that poor line control and two snags has positioned the spoon in the right presentation to a holding steelhead and it bit. My left hand, still wrapped with line feels tug, tug, tug...I immediately twist the line OFF my hand and reel in the slack. Then, the fish starts running and the drag starts going, but I'm still hung up on the rock...what to do? It becomes moot when the fish jumps and I see that what probably happened is that when the line hit the boulder, the spoon must have swung real low to a fish on the far side and after it grabbed and I tugged with my line-wrapped hand, it ran above the boulder and started across river, into the current. When it hit the air, the fish was heading to the far bank away from me, but was also between me and the boulder anchoring my line, meaning that my line is now wrapped completely around the rock in a 360' loop! Great. There was nothing to be done but wait for the inevitable and lose my fish and the spoon I had already decided was lost at the beginning of the cast :)

I'm not even sure that counts as any sort of fishing skill as it was a comedy of snags, hand-line fishing, and dumb luck...both bad and good luck, LOL.

Its so awesome being able to fish spoons effectively with out getting hung up or losing them! Saves $$! lol. Nice lil story right there and makes sense. Pics to come really soon, guessw i could just post the crappy pics lol (8 hours) after catching them
