Hi there;

We are currently in Guwahati, Assam, India; visiting parents. Took some pics while buying some fish for lunch today, thought I'd share a few here just to show the contrast with US. I am sure some of the members would be interested. Mobile snaps in a tough lighting condition, not real good pics to be honest.

The place is called Ganeshguri, the one of the best such markets in this region and definitely my favorite fish market. I've seen a few all over the world too..

Assam has been affected by unrest and terrorism since 1979, and this specific market has seen quite a few bomb attacks in the past. Last 5-6 years have been pretty quiet here, but if you are tempted to check Google or U tube for Ganeshguri I'd advise you to be careful, some of the things that come up are gruesome. Life goes on though, folks here believe in fate and take such things in their stride.

The last pic is from a village we visited earlier this month, that is pretty much where I caught my last fish 30 odd years ago before getting to Oregon.

Glad to hear you got to go home and spend time with your family, must be great! Those are wonderful pictures! They remind me of the open air markets it Israel. Some of the smells are wonderful, others..not so much. lol Thank you for sharing your pics! :thumb:

I was walking through a market like that in Bangkok and almost lost my cookies before I turned and ran out into the fresh air. Takes some getting used to the aroma for sure. Be careful over there!

Dana, it probably would be a bit difficult to believe, but the only smell in that market is of live poultry.. Chickens, ducks and pigeons. The fish are freshly caught, at the worst a day earlier and most travel less than a 100 miles to get to the market. If any of those guys had smelly fish he won't sell a single one. Folks here are very particular about their fish. Heck, once I jokingly told an uncle that he was cheated into buying some stale fish and he got seriously offended.

Excellent. I love seeing pics like this. When I lived in Sicily we bought food from open markets daily. Sounds like you've been blessed to be able to travel the world.

True Jamie, I can't complain much about being stuck at one place. I have a job that takes me around the world, I reckon I have worked in 8 different countries so far, from a few weeks to a few years. Oregon is the only place yet that has been able to hold me for more than a few years without yearning to come back to India

Very cool, in the 5th picture of the first set of pictures one of the fish almost looks like one of the fish they caught on a River Monsters episode.
