Going night fishing next two Friday nights

Well this Friday we have a full moon. So lets see if it makes for better fishing :) The tides are a little crazy with about a 8 foot difference between low and high. So it might be a little bit hard to fish with the tides ripping that hard. Next weekend the Friday the 13th the fish are going to have some nightmares ;) The tides look really good with only a few feet between high and low. The other thing is high tide is at 8:02pm and sunset is at 7:59pm. Should be a REALLY good time to go fishing with a high slack tide and sunset at the same time  I will try and take some pictures of the fish i catch we need some fish porn on here.

Well wasn't to bad of a night :) Had to work really hard for the bass they where not wanting to bite and when they did they didn't hit it that hard.

NICE PORN !!,,,,,,,,,Did you use a light in the water or just from a lantern ?

No we didn't use a light in the water or a lantern. I have used a lantern before but i don't like to use them. There are multiple reason why i don't like lanterns when fishing out there. The biggest reason is the glass gets hot and i have burned myself before. I have found out the best thing to use out there for a light is a headlamp. With the headlamp you get the light right where you need it whether it's on the rocks, fish, etc.

Way cool Shark!

Can you give some advice on how to rig up for that style of fishing? I have never surf fished before, but it looks like good times. Congrats on your tasty catch!!

Best,

Sorry for the horrible picture it was taken with my phone. Ok any way from left to right what i use for bait, Mister twister 3in, Zoom fat Albert grub, Zoom salty super fluke. You can get all these baits form bi-mart. For my main line on my pole i use %100 fluorocarbon spider wire 20lbs and for the leader i use the spider wire stealth braid 30lbs. Ya i know that is a little over kill for my line but when you have to start pulling fish out of the rocks you will need it. So how i rig this up is a use about 3 feet of leader. Tie a loop in the top of the line. Next tie on your 2 hooks about 12-16in apart and about the same distance take some hollow lead wait and put it at the very bottom of your line. The top hook is where i will put my grub and the bottom is where i put my fluke. I start off with the larger grub and if i dont get any strikes i will throw on a smaller grub. The hollow lead weight just crimp it at the very end just enough to stay on the line. A lot of times this is what gets stuck in the rocks and you can sometimes get the lead weight to strip off your line. That way you dont have to retie a bunch of rigs. With hooks i just use a regular bait hook for the grub and for the fluke i use a 2/0 worm hook. The fluke you just put the hook threw it's nose then run it threw his back.
It should look something like this. I tied these ones pretty close to each other so it was easy to see. I have found out that if they are to close the fish will not hit it as much.
fishing rig setup.jpg

The best way to fish this setup is to very slowly drag it across the bottom/rocks. If you have any other questions just ask i might have an answer. The other thing is don't be afraid to try different things. If it doesn't work try something else and if it works then you have something for your arsenal.

Thanks, Shark! Very informative. I think I'll give it a shot at some point.

Do you prefer the white jigs or do you use other colors too?

I have used some other colors but not a lot. I just have had a lot better luck with the white jigs.

Thanks for explaining how you do your rig, I might give a try as well!

I use top water baits when night fishing and found it to be more productive. Rapalas

Looks like dinner will be (or has been?) super good!

Thanks again for your rigging post, I want to check that out.

What kind of rod and reel do you use? I have a 10 foot spinning setup with 65# braid that I wonder if it would work on the surf. On the other hand, I have some smaller setups with mono that might be better for it too.

Later,

I have never done surf fishing but i have heard that you want to use a very long pole with at least a 2-3oz weight. If you look around some of the older post i know people have posted about surf fishing before. As far as jetty poles/reels i use spinning reel and I have several different poles. I mostly use ugly sticks my biggest one is a 9foot heavy action salmon/steal head rod that i use for lings. Then for perch, green ling, bass, etc i use about a 6 1/2 medium action ugly stick. A couple of weeks ago i bought a fishing pole from one of my co-workers that custom makes them. So i have been using that. It's a 6 foot one piece fishing pole rated for 12-20lbs line. It was one of his "cheap" fishing poles at $155 but OMG was it worth it. The thing cast so well and is so "soft" that i can really set the hook on the bass and not rip there lips off. You really don't need a huge fishing pole for the jetty just some thing that can handle a 2-3 lbs fish at the most. I think the biggest bass i have caught out there was 17in 2.5lbs bass.

i grew up on the coast fishn Newport, depoe bay and every thing in between i run 15-20 lb mono on 9'6 -10 foot steel head rods for pitchn small jigs or light bait set ups usually for green ling , pertch or bass and lings inf im close to the water and then i have a bait caster with 40lb braid for the 2-3 oz jig heads and 8 inch grubs or other large jigs or when im running 2 baits and 4-6 oz weights...

I'm planing to try salt water fishing this weekend. I'm from Corvallis so I'll be going to Newport. I want to do both surf fishing or on a jetty, I've just never done this and not familiar with the area. Could you show me some area that might be productive? I'm not expecting anything huge or large numbers. I just want to be in the area that might be some fish in it! ;)
I come back from 90% of my steelhead/salmon fishing trips empty handed so I'm familiar with the feeling!! :D

Any suggestion, PM maybe?! Thanks.
