folding landing nets

I'm thinking of getting a landing net for winter steelhead in the future and i don't know a lot about nets really so i need some help. most of the time i like tailing my fish but it seems some are just too pissed off and every time you touch their tail they freak out.

I'm looking for a net that is big enough for steelhead up to 35 or so inches and wont bend them completely in half while they are inside it.

It has to be one of the black mesh like nets for catch and release, not a cheap pos that will remove the fishes slime or get caught in its mouth and gills.

it must fold down and have a telescopic handle so i can carry it easily while hiking/wading up and down coastal rivers.

my budget is around 50-60 bucks but im not sure if thats enough for what i want.

any suggestions? im really lost here.. any help is greatly appreciated.

Bi-mart has a nice net. It is a frizball or frobill or something like that.

It has a telescoping handle, folds down quite nicely. I think the next material is a rubberized mesh. I don't know if it would not fold the fish over like you mentioned you don't want it to do.

But I think they are like $25 or $30. It might work for what you need.

spydey, that is a nice net but a friend has one and it just doesn't fit steelhead very well sadly. if that net was bigger it would be perfect though

I picked up the Fabrill 20x24 folding net from Dick's for around $50 for the same purpose as you. For the money, it's a decent net. It's been tested with 15lb+ steelhead and a large Wilson river fall nook. I think you compromise the structural integrity a bit with the folding design at $50 bucks but it will hold up to the run-of-the-mill salmon/steelhead.

I have this net, It is a good net and folds up quite nicely. You can even keep it as a short handled net, or make it a long handled net. It handles trout ranging from 16-20+ inches really well. I have not netted a steel in it yet because i always tail mine.

A buddy said he has fit a 32" steelhead in it but had to grab the tail to make sure it didn't flop out.

It's a good net and would do the job perfect for what you are wanting. Salmon would be tuff unless uner 30"

I netted the 24" steelie I caught last week at Lost lake with the $25 frabill net from BiMart. I wouldnt want to trust it for anything any larger. That being said, it is a good folding net.
