if you were near Florence about 7am today and saw a flying monkey, it was the one that had been on our backs as we continued to try and boat our first King...hooked up just before sunrise, 25pounds beautiful shiny buck, thanks to everyone on the forum that have provided tips and advice...we will be back out at sunrise Tuesday, our next goal: a 2 salmon day...cheers, roger

Congrats! You deserved that big time. Any keys to the success or was it just putting in the time?

Best,

Beautiful fish! great work! Hard work and time on the water does pay off! I bet now you're figuring them out, you'll start slaying em! Good job and get back out there!

Best,

thanks, I have been catching gazillions of trout my whole life (heck, I was tying my own flies at age 10) but didn't get to take up salmon fishing until last year, and wow has it been frustrating at times. we did get in on some Coho last year and that was great but missed most of King season...

I think the final 2 items were: paying extra careful attention to scent control (keep bad smells off, add some good scents) and get the herring down to the bottom (drop weight). I also took my time and tired this fish out so that when I brought him close to the boat, he had cooled off and was ready to rest a little....

roger

I'm glad to see that the flying monkey, has flown the coop. There's nothing quite like the first Nook!!!

Congrats!

Very cool. I am so happy for you guys. I knew it would happen. It is all a matter of putting all the ducks in a row which you did. Congrats!

From the looks of that picture I'd say your going to like fishing for chinook a lot. Glad you got you first one now they'll come somewhat easier for you now. Good job!

That's fantastic! Congrats. I'm still working on my first siuslaw fish this year.

Great job!!! Great photo!! Reminds me of my folks. :)

Take care!

thanks for all the nice comments, did anyone notice on the sonar screen, we are drifting over another big fish as the picture is being taken?.. the first half of a big 'king' arch is in the lower right corner of the screen...

Oh, I think you'll get into'em deep now.

Good job! You guys did good to find one today. :D

I know where that Monkey landed....going to give the mouth a try this Sunday in the drifter if the weather and water play nice. Anyone have any suggestions it would be appreciated. I've been using all the standard set ups. Cut herring, 6 foot leader, 12-18 inch weight flasher no flasher, plain cure, chartruce, blue, pink, rainbow? I guess it's just a matter of having your bait right place right time.

I was shooting the pictures in 1second time lapse (love my GoPro2) so I went a few pictures forward and here is the full fish arch...

but seeing big fish in the water does not mean the bite is on, we have learned that....Kokes are a different story, "see Kokes, catch Kokes"...

Nice fish! Will be out there on thursday.

I think you will be pleased, the fish up in the river (lots of them for sure now) seem to be finally getting more active, we watched 3 more caught early today and lots of fish at the boat launch being cleaned at noon. time to slay them!

note: ODFW girl reported no coho had come in today as of noon, lots of kings but zero coho, feeling here is still another week or so for them to show in big numbers.
