Fishable on Saturday?

Hey all,

I was thinking of hitting Walter Wirth in my Kayak on Saturday but I did not know if it would be fishable with all of the rain. Does anyone know if it is prone it flooding? I fished it last weekend and caught 5 trout between 12 and 14" and would like to do it again. However, that was my first time there and I do not know how that area reacts after a lot of rain. Does Mill creek flood the pond? Is it flooded? Will it be flooded? Is it accessible? Thanks for any advice or insight into the condition of the lake.

Of course it is flooded...have you not heard, that Marion county has been declared by state OFFicials as a "disaster area"? The forecast is also calling for MORE rain! I'd think that going out there now, would be taking your life into your own hands. And don't count on the police or nat'l guard to help...they are already busy and spread too thin to help.

Be smart. Stay home, until the levels go down again.

Calm down troutman! Maybe he doesn't pay attention to the weather or the news. I never pay attention to the news but I keep an eye out for the sky at all times. I have been to that lake and if it was flooded he wouldn't go near that nasty water. All that filth getting churned up by the creek. Won't even be a fish left if they get the right idea and head for freedom.

Just calling it as I see it. If it doesn't rain much between now and then, maybe no big deal. But, it is supposed to rain more. So, I'd say it's not wise...from two perspectives. Harder to catch 'em, and for safety reasons.

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

Some people, dont plan on fishing for at LEAST a week. Make plans for next weekend, as for this weekend you will have to watch fishing on tv.

Be smart don't risk it. I was out around town today and walling pond is overflowing flooding the town and im sure that walter wirth is the same. Down load some fishing games on your phone and stay dry!

Thanks for the insight and concern. Although I do not think I could take my life into my own hands on a 20 acre pond :)

I asked the question because I looked at the Willamette prediction and it is supposed to crest in Salem on Friday. The river in Salem is supposed to be 1' above flood level for a few hours - as opposed to Oregon City where it is cresting 5' above flood level and will stay above flood level for 3 days. I assumed small creeks down in Salem would have crested and be coming down already. Some small streams come down to safe levels in 12 hours after cresting - I have no real idea about Mill creek. Thus I thought there was a chance for that area to be a bit swollen but perhaps OK.

I can not get out next weekend because my daughter has her state swimming championship meet. Thus, I was trying to think of a place I could fish this Saturday. Sounds like Walter Wirth may be a poor choice. I will keep thinking.

Once again thanks for all of your responses!

P.S. I saw Benton county declared as a disaster area but not Marion County.

No reason why you can't check it out and let us know. I have been there after a soaking rain and couldn't get out of my car due to the parking lot being 5" under water. Other times, meh, not so bad and got a few bites. Most of the water has already started receding some and we aren't supposed to get much rain...

Calm down TD...not good for your blood pressure...

With the forecast of wind gusts to 50mph I have conceded this round to mother nature. If I lived closer I would swing by to check it out. For me a 2 hour round trip is too long unless a serious amount of fishing is involved :) I think I will go down to the Willamette just to look at the river this weekend. I find it exhilarating to see all that power. Once again, thanks for everyone's input.

Hmmm, with or without the winds, WW would not be on my list of fishing holes to drive for two hours to hit. There must be places closer to wherever you are located...

When the rivers are blown out I have not found many places where I can take out my kayak at this time of the year that have biting fish. Walter Wirth is one of the few places to meet all those criterion. I have shore fishing spots close by, but not kayak fishing spots. I need to explore a bit more to find some better closer spots. I have not yet gone to Vernonia pond (which I read is shallow and thus I doubted its ability to holdover trout) or Blue lake in Portland, which I believe is also quite shallow. Thus, sad is it may be Walter Wirth is a decent choice this time of the year.

FYI, I do not know why I did not think of this sooner, but I did call Salem parks number and they said the park was closed.
