From the hen I caught Saturday my first attempt using pautzke fire cure. Comments, ideas welcome. They look great to me.

Those are perfect!! Good job on the first cure. I use pautzke too. The river you are fishin right now, the fish are lovin that cure. They look thick, tacky, and sticky like they should be. Will leave a nice milk trail for the fish to key in on. Fish em as soon as you can, like the next time you go out. I like to use my lid to put cut up dime/nickle sized peices while on the river/ fishing. Not only will you be in the water longer, but your eggs will get more sticky/tacky/thick while fishing. those should hold together for 10-20 casts

you can't neccisarily say all that from a picture. i had some eggs looked good and all but fell apart pretty easy. these look good but he could have went to much cure or to little and they wont be as good as they look. no one will know until he fishes them. but as of richt now they look good

Joe is right. Its hard to tell. They all most look to wet to me, as per steelhead is concerned.

The thing is, most fisherman prefer different things. As far as book proper is concerned, you want a "harder", "tougher" bait for steelhead, the scent stream doesn't need to be as big and powerful as one would desire for a salmon.

Going from a picture, as is what I have, if i wanted to catch a springer, i'd give you top dollar for those eggs. They look big, loose, and juicy.

I'd say- Fish them, and you tell your self what your looking for.

Pretty eggs.

Like everone else said, they look great but its really personal preferance...

I use the Pautzke Fire cure also but I have found that I also need to use some borax on them because the fire cure makes them very juicy .I have actually laid them out to dry 2 times since they were done so that they are firmer now !

I dont think he will be disapointed in them tomorrow, or the next day or at all. He will most likely hook up on them.

I use fire cure mixed with some other things I add to it and its a killer for springers. If done properly with the right amount of cure you get a nice firm but moist bait that will hold up very well and milk out for a good amount of time. If I'm curing eggs for steelhead, which I rarely do anymore because they'll hit anything and I don't feel justified in wasting valuable bait on them, I use a borax cure for a firm dry bait.

I mixed 2 cups borx-o-fire and one cup sugar for steelhead, they are tearing em up....then I layed em out on paper towels in the fridge over night....sprinkled in borax and froze......steelies have a sweet tooth.....

I heared they had a sweet tooth from mike at orrt but I forgot to add the sugar. wonder if it's too late ?

nice looking eggs Ray should fish good for you.Dont know abut drifting them to much but under a float perfect. If you want to drift them in faster water set some out cut into your preferred bait size and put borax on them.Do not put sugar on them now because they will get way to runny and wet.

Remember thats his first attemped and they look good and if they dont fish great he has something to learn from. I like my eggs juicy for salmon and dry but not supper dry for steelhead. I have caught a lot of winter steelhead on super wet eggs too.
