Sorry to post this late, but here is my report on Diamond Lake last week. The weather was fantastic but the fishing was a little slow
First, very few blood sucking bugs. Only a couple of bites when I walked through the woods and would stop for a few minutes. As long as I was moving, the bugs looked for easier prey. Did not even bother with the repelant.
Fishing was slow, but we did get a few nice fish in the 14 inch to 18 inch range. Fishing seemed to pick up about the time the wind would start blowing. As we were in a canoe out in the middle of the lake, that meant we had to head back to shore. Next year we will have a real boat with a motor and be able to stay on the water until a gale hits .
The fish seemed to like green/chartreuse power bait and also night crawlers. Fished them on a sliding sinker set-up with about a 4 foot leader.
I did hook a couple of really nice fish in a row that practically pulled my rod out of the boat each time. I played the first one up to the boat - it must have been at least 20 inches. Then it broke the 4 lb. leader right in the middle! The second strike was a savage one too. This time it broke the leader on the first strike. I grabbed my rod and there was nothing there except the sinker, swivel and about 3 feet of my four foot leader! I was using P-Line Fluoro Carbon - anyone else have this kind of problem with this stuff? I've got a bunch of this garbage in 4# if anyone wants to come get it. Needless to say, I retied all my my setups with Maxima after this experience.
Wednesday night we saw an awesome lighting storm that started down by Crater Lake and traveled northwest around the back of Mt Baily. What a show!!!
All in all a great trip. Spoiled me for life with the size of these trout. Here are some pics.
