Diamond Lake report 9-6 to 9-9

Sorry to post this late, but here is my report on Diamond Lake last week. The weather was fantastic but the fishing was a little slow

First, very few blood sucking bugs. Only a couple of bites when I walked through the woods and would stop for a few minutes. As long as I was moving, the bugs looked for easier prey. Did not even bother with the repelant.

Fishing was slow, but we did get a few nice fish in the 14 inch to 18 inch range. Fishing seemed to pick up about the time the wind would start blowing. As we were in a canoe out in the middle of the lake, that meant we had to head back to shore. :( Next year we will have a real boat with a motor and be able to stay on the water until a gale hits :D.

The fish seemed to like green/chartreuse power bait and also night crawlers. Fished them on a sliding sinker set-up with about a 4 foot leader.

I did hook a couple of really nice fish in a row that practically pulled my rod out of the boat each time. I played the first one up to the boat - it must have been at least 20 inches. Then it broke the 4 lb. leader right in the middle! The second strike was a savage one too. This time it broke the leader on the first strike. I grabbed my rod and there was nothing there except the sinker, swivel and about 3 feet of my four foot leader! :mad: I was using P-Line Fluoro Carbon - anyone else have this kind of problem with this stuff? I've got a bunch of this garbage in 4# if anyone wants to come get it. Needless to say, I retied all my my setups with Maxima after this experience.

Wednesday night we saw an awesome lighting storm that started down by Crater Lake and traveled northwest around the back of Mt Baily. What a show!!! :clap:

All in all a great trip. Spoiled me for life with the size of these trout. Here are some pics.

Thanks for the report. I notice that when you don't follow astocker truck around the fish you catch are bigger.

Those are some fatties! Nicely done. Too bad you missed those bigger ones.

I love fat fish!! :D Thanks for the report and the porn...:lol:

Good report and some nice looking fish.

How old is your P line? I'm using that same stuff in the 6 pound to land steelhead. I just let the reel to the work....

That's right. I too, have landed summer steel with 6 lb. test line. So, you should be able to land those "GEM" lake 'bows with good/new 6 lb. leader. Maybe it was how your drag was set? I also prefer to use a rear drag spin reel, for fish like that. They allow much easier drag control, while the fight is on.

Well Done Bro.
Those are beauties.
I most always use maxima.
:lol::lol::lol:

:cool::cool:

The leader was literally days old from BiMart. And the drag was loose enough to play the fish, but firm enough to set a hook. Maybe just need to set looser drag, but never had that problem with Maxima. I'll just use what I have confidence in.

I can't wait to get back to that lake! :)

I use 2lb leader on 4lb main and fish a ultra lite rod set up to catch those 20+ inch Diamond Lake fish.... a looser drag would be your friend. I fish my drag so loose that its just tight enough to real the bait in with out a fish. Any more tention ( like a weed ) will cause the line to grag out. To set the hook I hold the spool to set then let the fish run. If he takes you to the weeds you might loose the battle.
The west side has been better but the south should get good. I like red PB with egg scent..it's been killer for me this year. I will post pics from my last trip as soon as I get them loaded.
Dawg.
