New to the area gents! How is the crabbing and fishing around Florence, what am I getting into 😁

Go to Waldport! Back in the day it was 1/2% of local crab netting, still good! Tony

Do you have a boat? Even a small boat can help improve your catch.
Crabbing can be pretty good down stream, but the crabbing pier tends to get fished out.

At the moment no. Looking into a fishing kayak.

I will be out on a small boat crabbing the bay Sunday for my first time. Any tips? Is 50ft of weighted line enough to play with as long as I avoid the deep hole? Thanks!

50ft is ok. says tony

My crabbing at Florence tends to be in the area of the Coast Guard station. The 12 tower is a good area and the north shore.
The south shore tends to get pretty shallow, and you can get grounded easy if you are fishing the outgoing tide.
I also tend to fish around the tide change and if possible avoid high coefficient tides.
The current through there can drag your traps.
Don't be surprised if you catch a lot of green crabs.
Kill them, whether you eat them or not, they are invasive and ruin the Dungeness fishing.

What about waldport? My boat is 13ft and short transom, I hear this bay may be better for me than Florence.

I've crabbed Alsea Bay.
Not a lot, but enough to have an idea about it.
From the across from the boat launch to under the bridge and around the curve on the north shore going downstream are all good areas.
15' to 25' of water seems to be the best depth.

Do not yak! good spots are best by the mouth/101hwy. Current runs fast and hard. You could be out in the ocean in 30sec. Says Tony

or "Do no yak in tidal currents and/or near the ocean unless you know what you are doing or at least wear your brown pants".
