Crabbin' & fishin' Christmas weekend

Me & a few friends are hoping to go crabbing & fishing at Yaquina Bay and do some surf fishing around the Newport area. I wanted to see if anybody could tell me how crabbing and fishing on christmas weekend usually does from year to year. Any predictions in comparison to past years? Please share your comments/arguments here. TY. Catch Ya Later!

Crabbing isn't as good in the bays during December. When the river levels rise you get too much freshwater in the bays for any decent crabbing. I can't tell you how surf fishing will be but normally not as good as in the summer when the perch are plentiful. Look for a calm surf and lower river levels for good times.

Thanks for the info. We'll go and see how it's doing.

we haven't tried there recently but I think the Alsea river tends to hold crab in the bay most of the year, less water flowing down it. there is a good boat launch also and not much distance to cover before reaching the good crabbing ground...

Your going to be in luck if the dry weather continues through Christmas. Watch the forecast. It's not supposed to rain for at least 10 days. If that dry spell continues the crab will be more likely to move back into the bays. Crabbing could get really good. I hope it works out for you. I'll probably head over for some crab if it looks like its picking up.

Yeah fresh water just washes the crab right out so try to go after a gOod period Dry weather. Not sure but maybe try to do some jetty fishing. Good luck

Sounds good. Hoping to do some jetty fishing too. I lack a boat, so I'd be fishing & crabbing off Docks, pier & Jetties. Might try Eckman Lake Just east of Waldport. I've seen song lunker Largemouths in there. It's looking pretty good right now. Hope the dry spell remains intact. Thanks for the advice.

not sure the cost these days or if they rent boats in winter but a few times in the '90s we rented a crabbing boat at Dock of the Bay: 3 hour rental came with 3 crab rings and some bait, I think they were 15' smokercraft with 15hp, plenty of room for 3 adults at least...not free but good fun and there was usually pretty good crabbing just across to the North side of the river and just up or down from the bridge...I found this info for them but no website:

DOCK OF THE BAY MARINA
541-563-2003, 1245 NE Mill St., Waldport
Boat and Kayak rentals, crab net rentals, crabbing from dock, clamming tools and information.

regardless, good luck...

I found Boat rentals for 60 bucks for a 4 hour rental and 90 for an 8 hour rental. Sound like a pretty good deal. Not sure if they rent them in winter or if they'll even be open on christmas weekend.
