Clear Lake Mt. Hood

I have experienced some tremendously great stillwater fishing at Clear Lake near Mt Hood. The fish here seem to be a little tougher than some of the neighboring lakes like Harriet and Timothy. The average size of the Rainbows are 10 to 14in. but 10lb.’ers have been caught. Not by me though.:( Brookies are abundant too and can get trophy size. For those of you who think fishing with powerbait is the Shiz-Nit, fish the dam but if lure and fly fishing is your thing, take the gravel/dirt road around to the furthest arm opposite the dam and troll. To get to this area, take the next right hand turn after heading towards the lake from Hwy 26. (If you find yourself at the lake you've missed the turn.) Follow it all the way around until you get to a wide left hand turn that leads to a dirt boat launch. Troll along this bank and then mosey over to the opposite shore and fish that as well. The gear guys know what works best and the fly guys can troll or use retrieve methods using any callibaetis pattern, olive or black wooly buggers, PT, and Zug Bugs. Switch to dry patterns when the bite changes to top water. The lake is usually accessible late May and bald eagles and ospreys provide entertainment.

I love that place and can't wait to get back out there this spring. The last time I went out there I used an ultra lite with 2# test and tossed a 1/4 oz yellow jacket print rooster tail. I ended up getting 5 in the boat which I released. The water is so dam clear I could see them chase my lure right up to my boat. I was kind of in the area you were talking about, although the wind was blowing me around. Good times. Perfect lake for a drift boat too.

I have yet to fish this clear lake and was always getting confused when you and GDBrown would make posts about clear lake and I'd see the pictures and think wtf those guys are full of crap that isn't clear lake! Alas I discovered there was another clear lake and I decided to forgive you for your false advertising.

Thanks! I've told you before where the turn off is for these Mt Hood Lakes by the mossy tree.:D

Jeanna there is a Fish Lake by your Clear Lake but up here there is a Frog Lake by Clear Lake. Your Fish Lake is a nice C&R fly only lake. That Fish Lake is not to be confused with the one in the Steens Mountains, or the one in Southern Oregon. Just wanted to Clear that up.;)

The fish lake by my clear lake only has water in it in early summer and then is bone dry, I always wondered how the fishing was early in the year, I've never stopped there when it has been full. It's funny all the lakes and creeks with same names that are so vastly different

One of my favorite lakes!!!!! Can't wait till summer. Fish on!!!!!!
