Im thinking of giving it a try. Anyone on OFF fish this style? if so can u give me sum pointers on whats a good setup to start:pray:...thanks

I fish a centerpin. It's not easy finding the equipment locally (at entry level costs). I have an Okuma Sheffield reel and Wright & McGill rod. Fun way to catch fish. Learning how to cast is the initial hurdle. Curious, what is the draw for you?

It intrigues me to learn new fishingg techniques...n it looks fun fighting a fish on a center pin

Been pinnin and grinin for decades....................Great tool for sure!!!

try fishermans marine

try fishermans marine

I got into center pinning several years ago and the guys at fisherman's marine set me up. The set me up with a Raven rod an Okuma reel and some pointers. It takes a couple hours to get the casting down but it is easier that learning to use a spey rod and more effective. I am a fly guy but converted pinner when the temp drops below 45F.
Fisherman's marine did have Okuma, Raven, Loomis and Shimano rods in stock but I would call all 3 locations to see what they have. The cheapest setups run around $300 and you don't want to know what the most expensive setups cost.
Also call before you head down to the store to make sure someone who knows about pinning is working that day.

Im gonna head down there in a few hrs...gonna give a look. I mainly drift fish, but pinning looks like the way to go when water is low n clear. I do bobber with a spinning setup but how cool is it to fight a fish on a 1:1 ratio.

It's freak'n awesome! Especially on 6lb-8lb mainline! I started with 6lb but bumped it up to 8lb. That being said, I don't break it out on days were the guides will freeze up. Having to palm the reel as your drag and reel like a mofo to pick up the slack is a very rewarding experience when you land that fish.

Glad to read your goin for it steelie....................On those cold days remember to take along chap stick for them icy guides.....You might also want to get a thin sheet of cork to put on the back plate of your reel for cold shielding as well............

Recoil guides help with freezing temps. I have been testing nanofil on mine and it seems to work pretty good. Nanofil will all but end any freezing issues! Can't bring myself to float fishing with mono. :D
