I hiked up to bloom lake back in early march. it was covered with snow but the hike was fun!! I took my fly gear up there but couldn't fish it due to the ice, slush, and snow. I didn't see any bugs or hatches and didn't see any fish either. Sorry.

One of my friends went to one if the ponds last night and saw a lot of fish rising. he is a bait fisherman and caught nothing. Were headed up dark and early suday morning with my fly rods. probably not the best place for him to learn fly fishing but it's a free setup so it should be entertaining evenif we get skunked.

Nice!! Glad to hear that there are fish!! I did see quite a number of frogs and newts. Just be warned, the bank access is pretty bad cause there are lot bushes, young saplings, and trees all around it. Good luck any ways and enjoy the hike up to it.

I'm fairly new to fly fishing but is there a hatch up there this time of year?

Well, I don't do a lot of still water fishing so I am not too sure as to what hatches would be around. Maybe contact Sinkline about that? I would think that some midges, chironomids? Maybe a streamer of some sort, like a woollybugger? There are A LOT of fallen logs in the lake so they would give some great cover but kind of tricky to get around with a float tube if you hike one up.
Let us know how it goes!

probably midges hatching.try very slow short strips with a size 18 griffith's gnat. i mean just slow enough to make a small v wake on the surface. i cast it where i see the fish rise. i also have success with any tiny low riding dry in olive or black you could also try stripping wooly buggers or fishing a mini leech under a strike indicator thats the best way ive found to search for fish when there isn't a hatch

Well no fish on the fly for me but killed them with the spinning gear. Cochren pond was a bust not sure there really is fish there and never ended up getting to bloom lake but lost like was easy pickings on stockers. Also saw two fish over 20 inches caught. Hope to go back with my float tube and fly rod soon. The lake was packed out though.
