Best opening day ever!

My friends:

Opening day this year was the best I've ever experienced. Out of two of us, we were limited by 8AM (started at 6AM) and caught 7 18" lunkers. Nothing special (besides the spot). Next day caught 5 more 18" lunkers. Garlic and power bait eggs.

Nice haul; and excellent first report!

Welcome to OFF.

Welcome to the best darn forum east of Japan! :D Good for you guys! The best part of limiting that early is the opportunity to go to another lake or stream for more.

Huh....i didn't kno u can get another limit from a different lake after limiting out.....

Sorry to add to this hijack; but this is an important detail.

I've been questioning that "daily limit" issue too. The way that this reg is listed under "Catch Limits" is, "5 per day, 2 daily limits in possession". To me, "5 per day" means just that (and not 10 fish in one day). In other words: catch 5 one day, and the NEXT day keep 5 more (for a total of 10 "in possession").

But, I see LOTS of peeps keeping 10 fish everywhere I go. Sometimes, I've even seen peeps catch 5 (or 10) in one water body. Then, go to another nearby water body, and then catch and keep another 5 (or 10) fish.

Personally, I NEVER keep more than 5 a day (usually don't keep any). I wish that ODFW, would spell this reg out more clearly, and then enforce it.

Nope: The 5 a day limit refers to an individual body of water. You then can go to another lake and catch a limit there. But that's it. If a ranger pulls your truck over and you have 11 fish, you have some explainin' to do.

Great job!

Sounds like you did the right thing. Caught a limit one day and then went back the next day and caught more. The regulations are pretty clear that you can only catch one limit of fish per day. If you are on a multi-day trip you can have two limits in your vehicle.

Daily Limit: Maximum number of fish or shellfish which may be legally caught and reduced to possession in one day. An angler
may take daily limits of several types of fish per day.

Possession Limit: Maximum number or amount of a type of fish or shellfish that a person may lawfully possess in the field or forest,
or in transit to the place of permanent residence. The possession limit is: 2 daily limits for all species, including jack
salmon except 1 daily limit for abalone, 1 daily limit on the vessel or three daily limits on land for Pacific halibut,
and no possession limit for adult salmon, steelhead, or sturgeon. Anglers are restricted to 1 daily catch limit and 1
annual catch limit for all fish species from the Columbia River, even if licensed in Oregon and Washington.

In Oregon, you can't keep more than one day's limit of fish during a given day without breaking the law.

That's exactly what I was thinking...ONLY 5 trout maximum per day. Period. If you catch more than 6--whether from the same water body, or not--it is a law violation. Period.

Sorry if I added to confusion, but when this issue came up last year I called ODFW to get clarification and was very clearly told the limit was per body of water up to two limits a day. Perhaps I spoke to the wrong person? BTW: What the heck is wrong w ODFW that they can't spell this out more clearly?
So how about this: everybody call ODFW, then we'll post all the different answers we're given and go with the majority. (Obvious sarcasm)

Wow, that is disheartening to hear. I am not sure why the ODFW could not just tell you that:

Daily Limit: Maximum number of fish or shellfish which may be legally caught and reduced to possession in one day.

That seems really clear. I find it a bit mind boggling that you were told differently.

Me too. It's a shame when a gov't. entity, does not know what the left arm is doing from the right.

No wonder peeps, are keeping 10 fish a day. Not even ODFW, can give peeps the correct answer...even though it's in their OWN reg book!

This really bugged me so I called again and got someone who was very clear: You guys are right: only five a day, no matter how many bodies of water you fish. The two daily limits are permitted if you fish a whole weekend. Apologies for adding to the confusion.

why would it be called a "limit" if you can collect more than one??? just take your 5 fish, and put the rest back, easy peasy... and we all get more fish...

Thanks for going the extra mile and helping to clarify this issue!

This new member clearly states the second limit was caught the next day. What is the issue?? Can we get back on track and welcome him/her to the forum? Thanks, guys.

Hello All:

Good to know about the 5 per day regardless of body of water. Me and my wife caught 10 (in the picture) for our limit in one day. The next day we caught five more a couple over 18 inches (see picture below). I'll be out tomorrow, just bought a used FishCat Cougar pontoon for $100!!!!!

20130303_113002(0).jpg18 inch trout, pink meat are good tasting!
