Beach bonanza

A friend asked me the night before if I wanted to head over to Brookings to do some fishing this last weekend. Though I wasn't able to do much planning and meet up with C_Run like I had hoped to do, we still had good time and caught a fair amount of fish.

Not only did I catch my first Grass Rockfish (16" & 2 lbs 5 oz), but I also landed my largest Lingcod (26" & 5 lbs 15 oz) and Kelp Greenling (15 3/4" & 1 lb 7 oz) to date.

In all, I landed two Lings, 3 Greenling, 3 Black Rockfish, 1 Grass Rockfish, and 3 Calico Surfperch. The others in my party totaled 4 Greenling, 1 Ling, 9 Blacks, and 1 Calico Surfperch over both days. We caught fish using anchovies, shrimp, sandworms, and lures.

A very productive first day gave way to rough seas, getting soaked by a sneaker wave, losing our stringer, and going home dejected on day two.

Still, a very fun trip.

Nice catch!! Some good eating there.

nice catch man i love bottom fishing. where was this at?

way to go!! nice to see someone's catch'n some lings I don't think I've ever seen a grass rockfish before let alone catch one.

Thanks all! It was a lot of fun. We were fishing between Brookings and Gold Beach from different spots along the shore.

I actually thought this was a Brown Rockfish before, which I've only caught two of, but after a bit of digging, found out it was a Grass Rockfish. It was the first and only rockfish I've caught on shrimp.

Nice catch...I've been wanting to get into some fish like those real bad lately! It's a really fun & productive area. If you get back over in that area anytime soon & you're into surf perch fishing, the sand spit in the mouth of the rogue should be going off any time now. Tight lines

Hmm...I've never fished there before. Is that the north or south side of the river mouth? I absolutely love fishing for surfperch--though eating them is kind of disappointing, due to their mushy flesh. Still, they're a hoot to catch!

Holler when the fishing takes off, and I'll try to make the drive over. It's about 4-5 hours from here to Gold Beach, so I have to do some planning.

It comes off the inside the south jetty. You fish off the west wide of it, your gear right in between the mouth of the jetties. I used to live in gold beach & fished them every year but now I live in Florence & haven't gotten back down there in 6 years now :^( If you go be sure to let us know how it went

Ok cool. If I get out there I'll holler at you. It is best during early August, then?

Glad to see you got some fish. I haven't had a day like that in a long time.Fishing time has been minimal but I did get to fish for surf perch in north Curry the other day- skunked. All I got was a couple of lobsters.

Still hope to do a meet-up some day. Let me know when you're over there fishing.

Likewise! Sorry to hear about the minimal fishing. By lobsters, do you mean actual lobsters, or is that what these mushrooms are called?

That's what they are called because of the color. Fungus porn...the best I can come up with.:(
